My story

Meet Amelia – A Sweet and Sensitive Senior Companion Breed: English Pointer / Hound Mix Age: Approximately 9 years Sex: Spayed Female Weight: Approx. 50 lbs Location: In foster care Adoption Status: Available Amelia is a gentle, approximately 9-year-old English Pointer and Hound mix who is seeking a quiet, patient forever home. She came to us from another rescue that recently closed its doors after many years of compassionate service to dogs in need. Amelia is fully vetted, including a senior blood panel, core vaccinations, and 4DX testing. She is also up to date on flea and tick prevention. She handled her veterinary exam well and tolerated a basket muzzle for safety during her nail trim. Temperament & Behaviour Amelia is currently living with a calm, similarly sized American Bulldog in her foster home. While her foster brother typically isn’t very playful, Amelia has successfully encouraged him to engage with her, showing her gentle and social nature. In her previous rescue, she lived harmoniously with multiple other dogs. However, due to her prey drive—especially noted with squirrels—a home without cats is recommended. She can be timid around new people and needs slow, respectful introductions. With time, patience, and the opportunity to explore at her own pace, Amelia does warm up and begin to show her sweet personality. Her foster family is using positive reinforcement to build her confidence and avoid overwhelming her. Home Environment Amelia would do best in a quiet home without a great deal of comings and goings from people she doesn't know. She’s still adjusting to many new experiences and will need time and understanding to settle into a new environment. Her adopters should be comfortable allowing her to decompress and gradually gain confidence. She is crate trained and eats her meals in her crate. It’s her safe space, especially when the family is out. She is also housetrained and does not bark when left alone. Amelia has shown some lower level guarding behaviours with other dogs (such as grumbling when her foster sibling approaches her food) and would benefit from continued guidance and training in this area. Activity Level & Training Amelia enjoys daily walks—ideally one longer walk (45 to 60 minutes) and a shorter outing later in the day—along with supervised yard time. She is still learning about toys and games, but has started to enjoy hide-and-seek and will initiate play with her foster brother. Her leash skills are a work in progress, likely due to limited previous experience. She is currently walked with a no-pull harness, which has been very helpful. She did well at the vet for her exam, but as noted, was uncomfortable with nail trims. Like many scent hounds, Amelia is very curious and follows her nose, sometimes leading to digging—especially if she’s picked up the scent of a critter. Even in a fenced yard, close supervision is recommended to ensure her safety. Ideal Adopter Amelia is looking for a calm, understanding adopter who will allow her to adjust at her own pace. She will benefit from: A quiet, low-traffic home A fully fenced yard A consistent routine Continued positive reinforcement training Patience with her socialization and leash skills Amelia is a sweet, intelligent girl with great potential. With the right support and environment, she will blossom into a loyal and loving companion. Located in the Barrie area September 28, 2025, 1:59 pm
