Shakita's world was full of love... until it wasn't. This sweet 7 to 8-year-old Chihuahua spent her entire life by the side of her beloved owner, who adored her deeply. But when her person could no longer care for herself and had to move in with family, everything changed. The home she entered had larger dogs who repeatedly picked on her, leaving her scared and unsafe. With a broken heart, her owner was forced to surrender her -not out of choice, but out of love, to protect her. Now weighing just under 9 pounds, Shakita finds herself in a world that feels foreign and frightening. She's confused, grieving, and doesn't understand why everything she knew has disappeared. The loss is heavy on her tiny shoulders, but there's still hope in her gentle eyes. Shakita gets along well with calm, respectful dogs and pretty much ignores cats. She does okay with older, gentle children (ideally 10 and up) who can understand that she's frightened and needs time to feel safe again. Right now, she's shy and hesitant — not because she doesn't want love, but because she's not sure who she can trust anymore. She needs a quiet, patient home where someone will take things slowly, speak softly, and let her come out of her shell on her own time. Someone who can offer her a warm lap, a safe corner of the couch, and the promise that she'll never be abandoned again. Can you imagine losing everything you've ever known in just one day? That's what happened to Shakita. Now, she's hoping someone will come along who sees past the fear to the little heart that just wants to feel safe and loved again.
