My story

**$2,295 in pledges to any rescue that may pull!** **New notes 8/9!** **EXTENDED** Kayno ACCT-A-224093 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Kayno must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER, EXPERIENCED FOSTER, or ADOPTER by SUNDAY, AUGUST 10TH at 10AM. Should Kayno's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Kayno was surrendered to the shelter on July 19th after living in a home for two years. In the home, Kayno was crate trained, mostly housetrained, and was described as a high-energy, playful dog who loved fetch, tug-of-war, and getting baths. He has had positive playgroup experiences with other dogs and was described as gentle and respectful. At the shelter, Kayno has shown signs of stress, but also glimpses of his goofy and affectionate personality. With a committed partner to help channel his energy and provide continued structure, Kayno has great potential to thrive. Please bring all members of your household and any resident dogs along to meet him. He was allowing petting from men, women, children and did not leash bite during his outing. He enjoyed giving kisses and staying close to his handler. *NEW* Volunteer notes 8/8: KAYNO was standing calmly at the kennel door and was easy to leash. He had some pep in his step as we walked through the kennel and did not react to other dogs with hanks or pulling. While outside, we took a short walk and KAYNO pulled moderately but it was manageable. He checked back 2x with me on our walk and had a straight and steady cadence. Has a little pep or hop in his step when he walks. Back at the shelter and large run, KAYNO sniffed around with his tail high and an open mouth. He jogged around the yard and was well-behaved around me. He did not engage with toys or jump on the platform. He took treats nicely. When I sat down, he came and sat at my feet. He sat there for a while taking some handling of his back, butt and head and chest (see video). His body language was loose, still and relaxed. KAYNO jumped on the bench with me and enjoyed more pets. He offered some kisses. His energy was medium level and he was well behaved overall. KAYNO stopped and watched a few dogs with no sounds or pulling. He stood place with a medium high tail and watched. Back at the shelter, KAYNO was alert and controlled as we moved through the kennels. He entered his kennel on his own and took treats nicely. No issue with leash removal. Nice dog. *NEW* Volunteer 8/6/25: First time meeting Kayno. He is VERY strong on leash but easy in and out of his kennel. Very friendly boy, but its clear from his energy level that he's not getting enough exercise at the shelter and it showed when we first entered the big run. He attempted to jump and hump me but a strong no and he was easily re-directed, we waited 5 mins while he then ran around doing some laps of the run on his own and sniffing as I didn't want to over excite him. After 10 mins when he was calmer we played fetch with tennis balls that he LOVED. He happily bought them back to me to throw again for him to fetch, it was hot so we couldnt continue for too long. He did not appear to know "drop" so we just used two balls and traded them. After 15 mins he was tired (yes that's all it took) and laid down at my feet and even rolled over for belly rubs. He was calm and loved being petted and just being next to me. I really hope people get to see this side of him which I believe is his true side, an active family with firm commands would be ideal for him. He was easy to return to his kennel. *NEW* Per volunteer 8/6: Kayno is a big headed love bug who needs someone who can help him learn some more manners. He was very excited to go outside and seems like such a happy boy. He is strong and pulled lot outside. I eventually harnessed him during our walk as he got very excited seeing another dog. He had no issues with me harnessing him and was fine with handling. On the way back, he did start leash biting, most likely due to being stress. I had no issues getting him back in his kennel. Per staff 7/30: Moderate issues getting out of kennel and walking through kennels. Mild issues with jumpiness. High energy. "Strong + pulls." Per staff 7/28: Leash bites when returning. Per staff 7/27: Moderate issues getting out of kennel and walking through kennels. Mild issues with jumpiness. High energy. "Strong + will pull hard." Per staff 7/21: Experienced fosters due to size and strength - but very good boy! Per volunteer 7/20: Known history: owner surrender Kennel presentation: Kayno was standing at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, mid/low tail wags, and his eyes were a bit wide and bloodshot (from stress). I opened the kennel door and it took a few tries for me to loop him, I ended up dropping a treat on the ground and that way I was able to lasso him over the head with no issues. Leash: minimal/moderate pulling. Handling: In the yard Kayno was very stressed, he was pacing and stress panting and occasionally jumping up towards me. He allowed handling but he seemed a bit uncomfortable towards the backside of him right away. He whipped around pretty fast when I went to pet him on his backside but didn’t do anything just turned away. With some time he did allow all handling. He didn’t have any interest in treats as when I gave them him he spit them out. He did seem to have interest in squeaky toys but did not pick them up. Returning him to kennel he was super stressed going back in and was lunging towards the kennels. Once he saw his kennel he hopped in with no issues. Play: no interest. Toys: interested but did not take possession. Color: blue. Per staff 7/20, playgroup: Friendly at gate, loose wags, gentle/dainty in yard, very respectful of other dogs and their space. Per staff 7/20: Energetic goofy but stressed boy. Definitely housebroken, urinated a lot then seemed to cower like he did something wrong. Took treats gently but wasn't too fond of restraint. Per owner 6/28: They had Kayno for 2 years and needed to surrender him due to a combination of life changes that made them unable to care for him any longer. He lived with children under the age of 12 and was friendly when meeting other children. They noted he is crate trained and sleeps in his crate, mostly housetrained, and knows his name, sit, down, no, stay, and drop it. However, he gets overexcited, can be reactive to dogs and cats, is super high energy, and is an extremely strong puller. They didn’t take him on walks, but he would spend time in the yard. He likes to play with rope toys, balls, bones, and enjoys fetch, tug-of-war, and baths. They noted his reaction towards cats depends on the situation. Their favorite thing about him is how playful he is and his ideal home would be “Someone that’s going to have time and give attention to when needed and get him used to walks and teach him new and more things.” MEDICAL: On 7/23, Kayno was prescribed precautionary doxycycline due to being exposed to a dog with leptovirus. On 7/24, Kayno was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold" which is treated with doxycycline. He tested positive for pneumovirus. On 8/1, Kayno tested negative for pneumovirus, but was positive for coronavirus and herpesvirus type 1. He is scheduled to be on medication until 8/6. During his intake exam on 7/19, Kayno weighed 75 pounds. His eyes were red and his teeth were mildly yellow, but he appeared to be in good health overall. - Due to being significantly overcapacity with dogs and cats and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
