Frodo is a cute as can be 2ish year old, 10 lb Shih Tzu / Lhasa Apso mix. Farfel's can't swear to the accuracy of this breed mix as no DNA test was done. This was the opinion of Texas veterinarians and we're going along with their educated guess. Frodo's story is a tragic one. He and another dog were abandoned on a tiny balcony in the burning sun and searing 100+ degree Houston heat. They were left with no water or food to slowly die. When they were nearing their end, a concerned neighbor heard their heartbreaking cries and contacted authorities. When police arrived they found the dogs still alive but desperately in need of help. Frodo and his doggie partner were brought to the shelter where after a few days, their friendly temperaments started to emerge. Shelter personnel fell in love with these two..amazed that after all their pain and torment, their sweet and engaging natures began to shine through. Frodo is starting out with great energy. While initially a bit frightened (which is completely understandable after all he has been through) this sweetie-pie is now blossoming as he learns about living in a nurturing environment with love and kindness. Now, just weeks later, Frodo's self esteem is growing each day as he learns that he's a very valuable guy that has so much to offer a dog-crazy adopter. Frodo's non-shedding coat is currently very matted and shelter-sad. He'll be groomed and most likely shaved down. His forever family will need to make a lifelong commitment to periodic grooming and excellent nutrition (5 star food and a daily salmon oil supplement are perfect lifelong protocols for general longevity and coat care) to keep his hair super-healthy, shining and cottony soft. Frodo is appropriately playful and inquisitive for his young age. This adorable little guy needs a few days to warm up, as he's been through a lot, but once comfortable, he would be very excited to be a couch potato and snuggle with his favorite people at the end of an active day. It has become clear that this guy is SO smart and very sweet - very typical of both the Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso personalities. Many would say these two breeds are among the most intelligent and loving in the dog world. Since Frodo is just a young guy, he's a blank slate just waiting for a kind and patient human to show him the way. He has all the potential in the world to be an awesome adult companion. Frodo will form firm bonds with his family and learn positive socialization skills through virtual or in-person positive reinforcement obedience classes. These classes will make a profound difference in a dog's ultimate behavior and in his relationship and bonding with his people. It does take time and commitment, yet pays off a thousand times over when you have a dog that can accompany you out in the world with excellent behavior. Farfel's Rescue feels very strongly that every dog deserves the opportunity for formal virtual or in-person positive reinforcement training classes. We therefore aren't willing to adopt Frodo out to a home that doesn't choose to offer him this training opportunity. Farfel's is happy to provide a list of approved virtual and in-person positive reinforcement / force-free trainers in your area. We're open to Frodo finding his forever home with a retired couple or individual who will love and enjoy a silly and super-smart puppy. A younger family that works from a home-based office would also be a great choice for a dog that would love nothing more than getting loved up periodically throughout the day. Frodo enjoys his relationships with all humans and dogs. We would prefer, however, to place him in a home with older kids (tail pulling or rough treatment will create an adult dog that's fearful of children). Older kids can also be active participants in a training regimen and friendship that's so important in a dog's development. Frodo will be up to date on his vetting and vaccinations to be in line with our commitment to only adopting out healthy dogs. He also has been neutered to support Farfel's commitment to a euthanasia-free future in the canine populations. Applications are currently being accepted for this beautiful and sweet as can be dog who is learning about love and acceptance in his life. An adoption application can be found at http://farfels.com/farfels-rescue/adoption-form/. If interested, please fill out completely and submit. **PLEASE NOTE** If you're truly interested in adopting Frodo, please be sure to fill out our Farfel's Rescue adoption application found at the link above or at farfels.com. Adoption site applications such as Petfinder and Adoptapet don't provide enough information and therefore aren't useful. Our Farfel's application is the only initial tool that we have to determine a great match for this very deserving dog. We're sorry, but in many cases, we're unable to get back to those that don't submit our Farfel's Rescue adoption application. Thanks very much for choosing rescue.
If you have any questions or would like to adopt Frodo, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
