My story

Chick ACCT-A-222624 is a 4-year-old spayed female who originally came to the shelter as a stray on 6/10. Chick was briefly adopted but was too energetic and lacked manners in her new home so she was returned for not being a good fit. She may start off shy, but behind those soft eyes and tentative tail wags is a sweetheart who’s learning to trust and open up more every day. Once unsure and nervous, Chick has made beautiful progress. She now enjoys gentle pets, seeks out attention when she’s comfortable, and takes treats with the softest little nibble. Chick is still building confidence, especially in new environments, but she continues to blossom with calm support. Her experience in a home shows she may need some work on her manners but she is willing to learn. She’d thrive in a patient home where she can feel safe, settle in at her own pace, and know she’s finally found her people. Chick’s present stay at ACCT On 7/3 volunteer noted: “Chick was overall good on her walk! She showed interest in sticks and was even playing fetch at one point. She seems playful as well. She did get a little mouthy with her leash but was able to be redirected. Seems like a really great dog with some training.” On 7/03 staff noted: “Spoke to previous owner, it seemed that the dog was just too much for them, dog would randomly grab pants leg and shake, they did not know what to do to make her stop. Previous owner said the dog nipped his wife, did not break skin.” On 7/3 owner noted: “She is high energy, crate trained, and not housebroken. She is aggressive and violent.” Chicks stay at ACCT from 6/10-6/28 Behavior: On 06/29 staff noted: “Per volunteer 6/28: Chick had not been out in 3 days and was quite high energy when I took her out. She would jump, spin, and pull on the leash which is different from what other people have noted (potentially due to the lack of exercise over the past few days). She appeared friendly towards other dogs. When inside Chick was much calmer and happy to get petted.” On 06/15 volunteer noted: Due to behavioral improvement Moving from experienced blue to experienced gold. Had to get down to her level to get her to come to me to leash her, she came over with head low, tail low wagging at the end, soft eyes, lip licks. In the behaved office she was social and affectionate to both a male and female, and took treats gently. She was interested in the toy briefly but disengaged quickly and came to me with ears to the side, gentle panting, tail middle wagging loosely and solicited attention. Loose and wiggly for body handling. When returning to kennel, I had to step into the kennel for her to follow, as she froze and refused to go into the kennel on her own. On 06/12 staff noted, playgroup: Fearful, avoidant, highly steerable, nervous, stiff, tucked tail On 06/11 staff noted: Took her out to relax out of the kennel environment. she was pinned in the corner on the backside. she flinched when i leashed her with wide red eyes. i needed to use some leash pressure to get her out and she came out slowly. she was very low to the ground when going into the room and remained very nervous. she walked around trying to find a place to hide. i did not attempt any handling at this time due to her amount of fear and wanted her to feel safe and comfortable. i offered her a treat and she sniffed it curiously with some low tail wags. she declined the treat and went to lay in a ball under the desk. she was more fond of josh with lots of low tail wags she used a baby voice and leash pressure to get her back into kennel.
