* $360 in pledges for the rescue that pulls! ** ** NEW VIDEO 05/21/2025** Lovey ACCT-A-219325 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Lovey must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by FRIDAY, MAY 23RD at 10AM. Should Lovey's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Meet Lovey, who has so much love to give that they had to put some of it in her name! Lovey was found tied to the front porch of an abandoned house on May 5th, yet she remained friendly and easy to handle—even in that frightening situation. One quirk we’ve noticed in the shelter is that Lovey has been much more comfortable with female-presenting handlers than with males. In her kennel, her behavior toward some men includes barking and lunging, while she shows no issues with others. This seems to be kennel-based, as she met a male handler outside, accepted treats, and tolerated pets—but became reactive again once back inside her kennel. With female handlers, Lovey has consistently been a sweet girl who enjoys affection and gentle handling. She appears to be fairly dominant when meeting other dogs, so meets with any resident dogs are needed. Due to her length of stay, Lovey is looking for an experienced adopter or rescue partner who can help her work through these fear-based behaviors and give her the loving, peaceful life she deserves! VIDEOS: NEW VIDEO 05/21/2025 Lovey interacting w a male through kennel https://youtube.com/shorts/HSyCr43xEFA?si=bIO9KOLE39LaAFru Meet timestamped Lovey https://youtube.com/shorts/Vivem_39rds?si=KaHJ12m08JBBFyNy Playgroup 5/3: Lovey, Goem, Tiger, and Candy drop leash: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nSeH3uJTe0 Playgroup 5/17: Santiago, Chop, Lovey: https://youtu.be/6taIICV7sBo Playgroup 5/17: Santiago, Chop, Lovey (2) [Santiago & Lovey spat]: https://youtu.be/A1FeYSGBrMo BEHAVIOR: Per volunteer 5/21: Wednesday night a male volunteer approached Lovey's kennel. She didn't react. Then he spoke to her and gave her treats. She did not lunge, she did not growl. She took the treats nicely from him. She was well-mannered. He even put his put his hands against the bars and she did not react. 05/18/2025 staff notes: Spoke to two different staff members about the "spat" in playgroup between Lovey and Santiago. One was recording, the other was in the yard. Apparently Santiago was at the point of wanting some personal space as he was being frequently mounted by another dog in the yard. He and Lovey were just sniffing each other's faces and (seemingly without warning) Lovey lunged at his face. There was some snarling and vocalizing during the scuffle. Once they were separated, there were no issues. While reviewing the videos of Santiago, Chop, and Lovey: Lovey was the smallest in the yard, but appeared to be assertive/dominant. She was running alongside Chop, but he wasn't interested in play. Santiago then approached Chop and went to mount him, which Chop corrected. Shortly after, she sniffed Santiago's hind end and they both disengaged. She got up on the platform and sniffed Chop's face and followed him around for a bit. They were mainly keeping their distance from her. Her tail was up the entire time, but alternated between being stiff and wagging. Just prior to the "spat" starting, Santiago had a low, wagging tail and Lovey's tail was straight up and stiff. She lunged towards his face. He became defensive and was on top of her and snapping, possibly trying to get her to back off. It didn't look like he was trying to bite her as his mouth was mainly open. She did go at him a second time. He then bared teeth at her and she turned away. He tried to get away as the staff member got his leash. Once he was leashed, he walked away with no issues and she shook off, was loose, and followed from a distance. It didn't seem to be offensive aggression, just her being assertive and him defending his space. 05/17/2025 staff notes: Playful, loving. 05/16/2025 staff notes: Playful, sweet. 05/12/2025 staff notes: Lovey wasn't reactive with me at kennel, tail wags, approached and put her paws up, no lashing out at the gate, soft in general. 05/10/2025 volunteer notes: Met with male staff outside, did a walk along, he offered her treats and pet her. She took them gently and responded to the sit cue. She was hesitant, ears back, averting gaze, lip licks, not soliciting social contact. He walked her back to the shelter and I placed her back in kennel. He then approached the gate and she immediately had whale eye, barking, lunging, snarling. He asked her if she wanted to go for another walk and showed her the leash and she escalated, barking harder and louder. He did not proceed to get her out on his own. 05/09/2025 staff notes: Informed that there has been some barking lunging and growling towards male staff members. I observed while a male staff member approached, Lovey was standing on the bar’s ears back, heavy panting, wide eyes. Licked his fingers a few times and he walked away. Another male staff member approached, and she sniffed his hand briefly, then began to growl, bark, lunge, directing her gaze towards him, standing on the kennel and staring at him while barking and growling. Was told there were other male staff she did this same behavior with. 05/07/2025 staff notes: She was standing in her kennel, quietly with ears, parked forward and tail metal wagging when I approached and was easy to leash. She pulled moderately to get outside and then once outside she kept a loose leash. She was unfazed by the body handling, maintaining neutral body language, but not soliciting More. She was interested in the treats and then began soliciting more attention from me. She would jump for the treats and did not respond to the sit cue. She was not interested in toys or play. She maintained neutral body language with being returned to the kennel and removing The leash. Gold 05/04/2025 volunteer notes: I just had Lovey out for photos and she was super happy to go outside and get attention from people. She definitely seems housetrained. She pulled on the leash when she saw other dogs and wanted to say hi. 05/03/2025 staff notes, playgroup: Steerable. Gentle & Dainty playstyle. Had some defensive behaviors in response to other dogs in the yard, but showed inhibition in not aggressing. Takes verbal correction from handler and responds to spray bottle as interruption. 05/03/2025 staff notes: Friendly dog, allows handling. 05/03/2025 staff notes: Dog was in flex space for a few minutes and during that time she immediately climbed into my lap and just wanted attention. She is very friendly! 05/03/2025 staff notes: Very friendly and easy to handle, walks well on a leash. MEDICAL: On 5/10, Lovey was prescribed FortiFlora due to having diarrhea. On 5/8, Lovey was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold" and started on medication. She tested negative for pneumovirus and is on medication until 5/21. During her intake exam on 5/3, Lovey had waxy ears and wear and tartar on her molars, but otherwise appeared to be in good health with a healthy coat. Due to being significantly overcapacity with dogs and cats and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
