Rover is happiest when he is wading in the water or running through the field with his pals, human and dog alike! As his confidence grows, he gets deeper and deeper into the water and will be swimming any day now! His post-river field zoomies make everything okay with the world. Rover would prefer a home that lets him sleep in bed with them so when he wakes up in the morning, he can army crawl up to your head and snuggle in with you. His morning and afternoon naps are spent upside down on the couch, and ideally, next to you! He is still timid of new people, places. and dogs and takes a couple of days to warm up. He bonds hard with his people and needs a home where his people are home most of the time and are patient and willing to work on his separation anxiety. Even with his best dog friends around, when his person is away, he has a hard time settling. He will also need a home that will slowly teach him that getting in the car means he is off to have some fun and that new people and dogs in his space don't mean any harm. He barks to protect himself when he is scared, but he has never shown any sign of further aggression. He has been in a room with a cat for an extended period of time and paid little attention to it, so with the right cat and some supervision at first, I think he would get along great! Rover is the most intuitive dog I have ever met. He picks up from other dogs' cues instantly and respects those who want space and plays with those who want to play (once he has warmed up to them, of course). He has absolutely no food aggression, but does get snippy when another dog tries to take a toy out of his mouth. He has even quickly learned to respect the sheep he lives with! Despite his hound-like physical characteristics (long body, outward facing front paws, and occasional adorable howl), he cares more about you than all of the smells when on a walk. He is food motivated only when he isn't freaked out (he still won't take treats in the car, for example), but when he is comfortable, he will do anything for a treat! He walks well on a leash and has great recall when off-leash, not letting you out of his sight. Rover loves to be on things, jump around, and zoom in whatever direction you tell him to go in - agility training would boost his confidence and give him something to work on! Rover will do best in a home with another dog to play with and show him life isn't scary. With the right amount of patience, love, and room to run, Rover will grow into the best sidekick you could ever ask for! Straight from the hills of Puerto Rico, we give you the rest of the puppies! Rover is part of Hope's litter of 6 adorable retriever-mix puppies. Cute and playful, they all are ready to go to their forever homes. Thank you for considering a dog in need!
