My story

Nylah was originally surrendered to ACCT Philly in October 2024 when her family was evicted and could no longer care for her. While she was briefly reclaimed, she sadly returned to the shelter in April 2025 when her owner’s housing situation remained unstable. Nylah is now hoping for a fresh start with a new family who can offer her the stability and love she’s been missing. Described as deeply affectionate, Nylah thrives in calm, loving environments where she can take her time to open up. She lived with children and another dog (a small Frenchie), and her owner said she loved to cuddle and would rather lie on your lap than go for a walk. Nylah is house-trained with occasional accidents, walks well on leash, and knows basic commands like sit. In the shelter, Nylah has struggled with stress, especially in her kennel, where she has shown fear-based behaviors including growling and food bowl guarding. But once outside, she transforms into a snuggly, sweet girl who walks calmly and seeks affection. She’s had many positive interactions with staff and volunteers who have noted her softening demeanor and clear desire to connect. Nylah is dog-social but not cat-friendly and should be placed in an adult-only home due to past behavior concerns and high sensitivity to stressful environments. She’s a gentle girl who’s been through a lot and is ready to be someone’s whole world again. Easy to handle and very affectionate gal. 04/18/2025 A little afraid, non-aggressive. Warms up to you once outside / on leash. Walks well on leash. Also appears she lived with children in house. 10/25/2024 Reactive in kennel earlier, but later greeted with soft eyes and wags. Leaned in for cuddles, followed handler around the yard, and climbed into lap. Allowed all-over handling and returned to kennel with ease. 10/25/2024 Per volunteer: Walked perfectly on leash. Nervous but clearly wants affection. No signs of aggression. 10/24/2024 Affectionate outside with staff during dog meet. Jumped up wagging and leaned in for pets. 10/23/2024 Guarded her food bowl and mouthed it to the point of injury. Growled when watched. 10/22/2024 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION: Growled and hard-stared in kennel but allowed leashing. Outside: Avoided eye contact, refused treats, but tolerated handling and solicited pets briefly. Color level: Blue 10/21/2024 In the car with her owner and dog buddy Maze, Nylah was relaxed and happy. Became more shy and fearful in the shelter. Crusty scab on tail base, clear eyes, right ear scab. 10/31/2024 – URI symptoms, started on doxycycline. 10/24/2024 – Suspected flea allergy dermatitis, two mammary masses noted. Mild ear debris. 10/21/2024 – Skin irritation, ear infection, thinning fur, and broken nails noted. ACCT Philly is located at 111 West Hunting Park Ave in Philadelphia.
