Hazel is an adorable 2âyearâold Aussie mix, weighing just 25 lbs with the sweetest little face that makes her look like a forever puppy. Background: Hazel was rescued from a rural Arizona property where more than 30 dogs lived without running water or electricity. Despite her tough beginnings, she transitioned beautifully into her foster home and blossomed into a happy, playful girl who adores affection and thrives when she feels safe and loved. Personality: Hazel is a little shy in the beginning, delightfully quirky, and oh so sweet. Her confidence blooms quickly around other dogs. Once she trusts you, she offers gentle kisses and shows off her silly, toyâloving side. She loves belly rubs and chin scritches. Hazel absolutely must have another friendly and playful dog in her home—canine companionship is essential for her comfort and happiness. Health: Hazel arrived with a congenital heart defect called Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA). Thanks to generous donors and a skilled veterinary team, she underwent a successful, lifeâsaving surgery and is now expected to live a long, healthy life. Her only remaining followâup care is a routine scan in December to confirm everything continues to look great—this appointment is fully covered by our rescue. She is spayed, microchipped, and fully up to date on vaccines. Training: Hazel is housebroken, crateâtrained, and learning leash skills beautifully for a dog new to structured walks. She responds well to gentle guidance and picks up cues quickly by watching her dog friends. Ideal Home: Hazel is a special girl who needs a patient home that will let her settle in at her own pace. She would do best in a quiet home without small children, and there must be at least one playful, friendly dog in the home—no exceptions! With the right environment, Hazel will blossom into a deeply affectionate and loyal companion, as she has in her foster home. Because Hazel is still learning to feel secure in new environments, she is considered a flight risk during her adjustment period. Her adopters must take extra care with doors, gates, and outdoor transitions, and be committed to using proper safety measures until she fully settles in. Adoption Requirements: Hazel's adoption fee is $350. If you live in the Phoenix metro area and think she could be the right fit for you, please complete an adoption application*: helpadogsmile.org/adoption-application *Please note that the application is not a commitment to adopt–it is a tool used to help determine if a dog and applicant would make a good match. Applications are forwarded to the foster family for review and follow-up. July 30, 2026, 8:50 pm
If you have any questions or would like to adopt Hazel, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
