My story

Prince is a 10-year-old German Shepherd mix with the softest eyes, a gentle soul, and so much love still to give. Like many senior dogs who have experienced big changes in their lives, Prince needed time to understand that he was safe in foster care. Once he begins to trust, though, he forms incredibly strong bonds and becomes a loyal companion who simply wants to be near his people. He loves swimming, enjoys leisurely walks, and still has plenty of life and personality left in him. Prince is housetrained, knows several commands including "sit," "stay," "down," "come," and "leave it," and is wonderful on walks. Cars, bikes, skateboards, and other everyday distractions don't bother him at all. He gets along beautifully with other dogs and cats and enjoys the company of calm, respectful adults only. As he has settled into foster care, he has made tremendous progress and has become a sweet, affectionate boy who loves sleeping beside his people and being part of the family. Prince is the kind of dog who needs relationships to develop at his pace. New situations and unfamiliar people can make him feel unsure, and when he first arrived, he needed space and patience to adjust. He is a dog who values his boundaries and prefers not to be restrained or rushed into interactions. Once trust is built, he becomes much more relaxed and affectionate. Prince is also a bit of an escape artist and has turned slipping out doors or scaling fences into something of a game, so he must always be securely managed outdoors with a martingale collar and harness attached to separate leashes. Because he can be difficult to catch and may react if grabbed unexpectedly, his future family will need to be mindful and set him up for success with careful management and routine. Prince has also made incredible progress with his house manners. When he first arrived, he marked indoors frequently, but since being neutered and settling into a routine, he has remained fully housetrained in foster care. As with any dog moving to a new environment, there may be an adjustment period and some old habits could briefly resurface, but consistency and patience will help him settle in again. Prince's ideal home is a calm, patient one with experienced dog owners who understand that trust is earned and that some dogs simply need a little extra time and space. Because he can become uncomfortable with restraint and likes to approach relationships on his own terms, he requires an adult-only home. The family lucky enough to earn Prince's trust will discover an incredibly loyal, loving companion who has come such a long way and still has so much happiness left to share in his golden years. Our adoption fees cover all up to date veterinary needs, including but not limited to: full veterinary examination, age appropriate vaccinations, fecal test and parasite prevention, wellness bloodwork, spay or neuter, and microchip. All dogs will be started on a 6 week trial of pet insurance after adoption. Local adopters can take advantage of 50% off a training course at Ruff Haus in Barrie (www.ruffhaus.ca) and all adopters will also be signed up for Petcademy to offer 30 days of free text-based behavioural support. Please visit our website www.preciouspawsrescue.ca to submit an adoption application.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Prince, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
