My story

Meet Benny! Benny is an adorable, 3 year old, 11 lb Chihuahua mix. Benny’s journey started in Carlsbad, New Mexico, where he was found as a stray and brought to a busy shelter. As you can imagine, that environment can feel pretty overwhelming for a small dog, and Benny was understandably scared. But even through all of that, he showed everyone just how kind and sweet he is at his core. Since arriving to Colorado and settling into his foster home at the end of March, Benny has been doing exactly what we hoped he would do: taking a deep breath and finally getting the chance to just be a dog. His true personality is already starting to shine through! His foster reports that Benny is incredibly sweet and bonds quickly with people and other dogs. He may take a minute with new people to observe and get his bearings, but in just a few days he starts to feel safe and comfortable. Once he does, you’ll see just how affectionate and loving he really is. He’s the kind of dog who will quietly follow you around, keep you company, and be your little shadow. And one of his absolute favorite things in the world? Cuddling! Benny loves to be held and will happily melt into your arms, soaking up all the comfort and affection he’s been missing. From Benny's foster: * * * * "Benny is super sweet and learning that the world isn't so scary. I've had him about a week and a half and he has totally warmed up to me and trusts me! He is still a bit shy with my roommates since they don't interact with him as much. He is shy with new people, but warms up. He sleeps in bed with me and has become quite the cuddle bug since coming out of his shell!! He doesn't mind sleeping in his crate, though. He did for the first few nights home and did great. At first he wasn't great on walks, because he was nervous and would just stand there / freeze (I live near a bunch of frat houses so there were tons of loud noises which he was uncertain about). But now he does good on walks! Sometimes just needs some encouragement, but definitely prefers a more quiet walking environment. He spent last weekend with me at my family's house in Denver and he was THRILLED to have a yard to potty and explore in, so I think he would do best with an adopter who has a yard for him. But if not, like I said he is much better at walking through the neighborhood now. He just has some more confidence to gain! He is still a bit timid, and will go the other way if I approach him too fast. But he is so sweet and you can see he just wants / needs love. He comes and cuddles with me when I'm sitting on my couch or laying down. Overall he is a super sweet dog who just needs to slowly warm up!" * * * * Benny would thrive in a calm home. A retired adopter or someone who works from home would be absolutely ideal for him, as he truly enjoys having his person nearby and a predictable routine. It’s important to understand that Benny isn’t a “shy dog forever” situation. He’s a dog who has simply had a lot of change in a short period of time, and he’s already showing how resilient he is. Every day, he’s growing more confident, more relaxed, and more connected to his people. We'd like to place Benny in a home where he'll get consistent stimulation, exercise and love. A (virtual or in-person) positive reinforcement group training class promotes great behavior, bonding and confidence. Training is so important in the future behaviors of every dog. It's for this reason that we're unwilling to adopt to a family that doesn't make this loving choice. Farfel's is happy to provide a list of both in-person and virtual positive reinforcement / force- free trainers in your area. Benny is up to date on his vaccinations, has been fully vetted, is healthy, heartworm negative, and is neutered. Farfel's Rescue is a fully foster based rescue, and offers a one week trial with every adoption. We feel that this is much more beneficial to not only the dog, but the adopter too. We believe that only getting 20-30 minutes with a dog before deciding on a lifetime commitment is not a fair amount of time to the adopter, or the dog. Therefore we give adopters one week with the dog to assure it is the right fit, and offer a full refund of their adoption fee should it not workout within the week trial. Farfel's Rescue has been doing adoptions this way since 2005 and is thrilled to adopt out ~400 dogs each year. Applications are currently being accepted for our wonderful pup.
