My story

Introducing Ambra, a stunning shepherd with a flowing coat and a heart full of love. When she first arrived, her veterinary team rallied around her, determined to give her a second chance at life. Her family, living deep in the countryside, had struggled for five days to find help, with the closest emergency vet a daunting three-hour journey away. Now on the mend after being struck by a car and undergoing two surgeries to repair her injuries, Ambra is showing her resilience. Her first operation mended her injured hip, cleaned and stitched her infected wounds, and carefully stabilized her other leg with a splint and bandages, giving it the best chance to heal naturally. While antibiotics helped her wounds heal and her stitches have been removed, Ambra’s leg needed more care than expected. In her fourth week, she was hospitalized for a second surgery. She still wears her splint and bandage, which we hope to remove in about three weeks. Each week, she visits the orthopedics team at UCDVMTH for fresh bandages. Now, Ambra confidently walks into her appointments on her own, a wonderful change from her early days when she needed a sling just to stand and ride in a gurney to her check-ups. Ambra’s journey is far from over, with another 5 to 7 weeks of crate rest ahead to ensure her surgical sites heal fully. Yet as her strength returns, her joyful, lovely personality shines through. For now, she enjoys short, twice-daily walks and endless cuddle sessions with her foster mom, happily playing with toys while she rests. We still have one more surgery for Ambra to spay her and repair her abdominal hernia. We anticipate this surgery to take place in 7 weeks, coinciding with her clearance from her orthopedics team.   Every bit of support, whether it’s a donation, supplies, or a heartfelt message, makes a world of difference as Ambra heals. If you know anyone who adores long-coated shepherds, please share Ambra’s story so she can find the loving forever home she deserves. Ambra delights in her meals, eagerly accepts treats to slip on her e-collar and settle into her crate, takes her medicine with grace, and absolutely loves pets and being told she’s a good girl. We can’t wait to share more of Ambra’s journey as she heals and her beautiful coat returns. Once she gets the green light from her vet team, she’ll finally meet her foster siblings and start making new friends. While Ambra recovers, your support through financial donations, supplies to keep her mind engaged with enrichment toys, or good wishes would mean a lot and is greatly appreciated. Our wishlists at Chewy and Amazon provide a general idea of our needs. Ambra is currently eating Purina Pro Plan kibble, which we can obtain at approximately $70 per bag with our discounts.  We are grateful that Ambra’s medical care is through the UCDVMTH Fracture Program for Rescue Animals. If you would like to help, we encourage you to donate to the Fracture Program in support of Ambra’s care here. It’s a fantastic service that has helped other shepherds in our program in prior years and other shelter animals as well.  Ambra will be ready for adoption once she is medically cleared and spayed. Have you checked out our YouTube channel? We would greatly appreciate your support by subscribing, liking, and commenting on the videos we share of our adoptable shepherds in action. You can also follow us on Instagram,  Facebook, and our newest Threads account, where we post plenty of news and updates about our shepherds. As a foster-based rescue, ShepHeroes is always in need of fosters. An overwhelming number of shepherds in our local shelters need our help for a fresh start. Would you share your home and part of your life to help shepherds find new families? You provide the love, and we'll provide everything else! Saying "yes" today truly saves a life. Complete this  https://www.shepheroes.org/foster-form, and we'll be in touch ASAP! We appreciate your consideration. ##2702372##

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Ambra, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
