My story

 ALL our cats and dogs are in the NY area but can be adopted out of state to the purrfect furever home.  In some cases, we can help transport.  Zani's al fresco Summer Adoptions  follow us on FB to find us this summer as we will try new locations to meet the needs of NYC and support the little stores:)     Name: Canela Age: 5 months Sex: Female Weight: 18 lbs Spayed/ neutered? Yes House-trained? We are working on it; on a scale of 1 to 10, she’s a 6—she needs a little more training to reach the 'A+' status. Crate-trained? Yes, provided the crate has enough space for her to be comfortable. She really enjoys sharing her crate or space with other dogs. Leash-trained? No, she needs training. Her rescue mom has many puppies to care for and doesn't have the time to take them all for walks. Good with dogs, cats, and children? Yes! She loves them—she really enjoys having other dogs around, as it makes her feel comfortable and safe.Are there any resource guarding issues? No. Friendly with strangers? Yes, although she is a little shy at first. Personality: Playful, friendly, and has a very healthy appetite! Heartworm tested? She is still too young; she should be tested for heartworm after she turns 6 months old. Vaccinations: She has received her 1st dose of DHLPP, Bordetella, and Rabies. She will need her 2nd and 3rd booster doses of DHLPP to complete her vaccination schedule. ***Biography: Canela is a puppy who was abandoned at a baseball park in the municipality of Vega Alta, Puerto Rico. She was found in a state of extreme fear; she was terrified and would not let anyone catch her—until, after several failed attempts, she was finally successfully rescued. Ultimately, she was brought to safety so that her medical protocol could begin, paving the way for her to find a happy ending, far removed from danger and life on the streets.   ***IMPORTANT RECOMMENDATIONS    I was talking to the rescuer/foster mom about her personality and her recommendations for selecting the right home for her. Canela was rescued just 5 weeks ago, but throughout this time, she has consistently proven herself to be a very sweet and docile puppy, even if she is a bit shy at first. However, as soon as she receives some affection and attention, her shyness begins to fade; she starts to loosen up and gain confidence. If you accompany this process with small pieces of cheese or tasty treats, you can win her over very easily. Her foster mom mentioned that Canela should live in a home with another dog—ideally one that is young, active, affectionate, and playful—because she does not like being left alone. It is important to understand that Canela was all alone on the streets while she was still a very young puppy; she missed out on the crucial experience of being raised alongside her mother and littermates—a process we know plays a vital role in a dog's personality development. An ideal home for her would be with a family that has older children and where someone is always present or with a retired family that remains active and agile. If you are seriously interested in adopting one of us in particular, please fill out an application early Friday so that we can be sure to be there. Otherwise we decide based on other variables. Usually we are in our foster homes so this is a bit more stressful and a slightly artificial environment but we do want to be seen and find our furever homes too.   Please consider providing a home for more than one dog, especially if you are considering adopting a puppy. Dogs are pack animals and very much enjoy as well as need other dog company to learn to play, socialize and be good companion animals to people. The upside to this is that you won't feel as guilty leaving them alone and you get twice the love. Please come! And if you can't adopt, maybe you can foster or volunteer, and you can always donate! If you want to know about cats/dogs specifically being shown at our adoption locations, please email us info@zanisfurryfriends.org closer to the date so we know your interest and will make every effort to have that pet at the event or let you know how and where you can meet.  It is extemely helpful and speeds up adoption if the application is filled out prior to visiting us so please do that before coming to our weekend events.
