My story

For Adoption: Nila! Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. We at PDR believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process. To apply for adoption and for more information on our process and requirements, visit our website at https://pounddog.ca/adoption-info/. Nila is the cutest 6-year-old Jack Russell Terrier/Dachshund mix with a soft white and blonde coat and an extra special feature … she’s a tripod (three-legged dog)! Small but stocky in size, 16lbs, and full of personality, Nila is an affectionate, playful, smart, and confident companion who’s always ready for fun and adventure. Nila was picked up as a stray and spent 10 days in a pound, where sadly no one came to claim her. Thankfully, Pound Dog Rescue stepped in to give her the second chance she deserved. Despite her uncertain past, she radiates happiness and hasn’t lost her love for humans or her joy for life. Nila would do well in almost any home setting whether an apartment, townhouse, or detached house. She’s curious about everything you do but is just as happy curling up in her bed for a nap. Nila is very smart and learns quickly. She loves searching for hidden treats around the house or in her sniff mat. You’ll occasionally hear her bark when she’s playing or feeling expressive, but most of the time, she’s relaxed and content to lounge near you. Nila enjoys walks that range from 10 minutes to an hour and walks beautifully on leash with some occasional need for redirecting. She especially enjoys taking her time to sniff and explore. She loves sitting in the sunshine, watching children or other dogs play nearby. Nila is incredibly affectionate and shows her love in the sweetest ways every single day. She loves curling up beside you on the couch or snuggling into her own cozy bed. Playtime is also one of her favorite parts of the day. She enjoys chasing her foster family around and keeping herself entertained with her toys. Her endearing habit of hiding treats for later is just one of the many ways she’ll keep you smiling. If you take too long with her food, she’ll give her bowls a few dramatic smacks to let you know dinner is overdue. It’s her gentle (but very effective) way of placing an order. Bath time is a breeze for Nila as she stays calm and cooperative, only giving a little shake when she’s done. Since she’s low to the ground, she tends to get a bit messy in wet weather, but she doesn’t mind having her paws, belly, and chest cleaned afterward. Nila is fully house-trained and will let you know when she needs to go outside with a meaningful stare. She’s also crate-trained and comfortable spending anywhere from 10 minutes to many hours in her crate. She rarely whimpers and usually settles quickly. At night, Nila is happy to sleep in her bed beside yours or rest peacefully in her crate. She also enjoys car rides whether it's sitting in your lap, in the crate, or strapped into a seat, she’s calm and content on the road. Nila would thrive as the only dog in the home. She’s currently working on her social skills around other dogs, as she can occasionally stare, growl, or bark at dogs she finds threatening but she’s easily redirected and quickly focuses back on her person with a treat or gentle praise. Her reaction to cats in the home is unknown. Nila is wonderful with children aged 6 and up who know how to interact respectfully with dogs. She’s gentle, patient, and has enough playful energy to keep kids smiling. Nila knows basic commands like sit, wait, and leave it. True to her Dachshund side, she can be a bit stubborn especially when it comes to the “lay down” command. Even though she loves napping and lounging around, she’s surprisingly resistant to being told to lie down! Continued training will help her build confidence and maintain good social habits with other dogs. Nila does well at the vet, though she appreciates gentle handling during exams and shots. She has been spayed, is up to date on vaccinations, and everything medical. She recently had her teeth cleaned and had some teeth extracted to keep her oral health good. She has two small cysts one on her front left leg and one on her back right leg which her vet has confirmed are fine and simply need to be monitored for any changes. Nila is in great health and ready to find her forever home. Overall, Nila is a low- to medium-energy dog who loves to play, go for walks, or simply relax beside you on the couch. She enjoys soft toys, searching for treats, and playtime with her humans. Nila would thrive as the center of attention in her new family, soaking up love and giving it right back. If you’re looking for a cute, confident, loyal, smart, and affectionate tripod, Nila will fill your home and your heart with joy and love.
