Sugar is an abandoned dog who was sadly left alone in a field in a neighboring town for several days before she was taken in by animal control, this sweet girl is hoping for a family who will give her the security and commitment she so deserves. While she looks like a smaller dog, she is just a little under 50 lbs. We have found that she is very afraid of some men and will try to run away from them if at all possible. This eye-catching auburn-haired beauty is approximately 2-years-old, believed to be a Chow/Shiba Inu/Shepherd mix, although she likely has other breeds in her heritage, too. Sugar may play hard to get at first, especially with some men, but if you let her check you out at her own pace, she'll soon warm up and give you kisses! She has proven to have barrier reactivity to other dogs and passersby when she is behind a fence, and sometimes has reactivity to other barking dogs when she is leashed - these behaviors can be modified with training and desensitization over time. She's as sweet as her name implies, but needs that extra bit of help and commitment to learn better behaviors after her rocky start in life. After being dumped and left behind, she can be a little clingy and anxious and will need time and patience while she learns to trust and feel secure again. We think that Sugar will do best as your one and only (she is dog-selective) and in a child-free home. Sugar is a vision of beauty with a thick, red-gold coat and soft, melt-your-heart eyes that let you know just how sad she is to have been left behind (but they haven't lost their sparkle!). She is ready and waiting to learn how good life can be when you're loved and treated with kindness.*Approved applicants are welcome to participate in our popular Slumber Party program and take a dog home for up to 2 weeks to make sure he/she is a great fit. If you think you might be interested in adopting, your first step should be to complete an Adoption Application found on the website at caninerescue.org. *After you have completed your application, you will get a confirmation that we have received your application. It takes a lot of time to process the applications, so we ask for your patience while we do so. If you see that the dog you were interested in has been adopted it means there were many applications for that dog and we did not get as far processing your application before a home was found. We welcome you to apply again when you see another dog that interests you. If you have a question, please email us adoptions@caninerescue.org. It is much easier and quicker for us to respond by email as we receive many phone calls each day. We do adopt out of state, however we do not transport or ship dogs. Potential adopter must be able and willing to travel to the Rescue to meet the dog they are interested in. *PLEASE double check all of the phone numbers that you provide. If they are incorrect, we will not be able to process your application. Please also let your references know that someone from NCCR will be calling them. Most adoption team members call from their personal phone so advise your references that there may be an unknown or private number calling them. Thank you!NYS Registration #RR028
If you have any questions or would like to adopt Sugar, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
