My story

Meet Abby and Elmo, a perfectly mismatched but completely devoted bonded pair! Abby is a three-year-old, 55-pound Australian Cattle Dog mix, and Elmo is a five-year-old, 9-pound Chihuahua mix. They may be the “odd couple” in size, but their hearts are deeply connected. Elmo is a timid little guy who carries a few extra pounds, and while he allows handling, new experiences can make him nervous. Abby, on the other hand, is the steady presence in their partnership. She may start off a little cautious with handling too, but once she feels safe, she’s incredibly sweet and affectionate. Together, they give each other courage. When they first arrived at Maricopa County shelter, staff noted they wouldn’t even eat without one another. While they now eat separately, their devotion is still clear. Abby was so bonded to Elmo that when we brought her back from County, she tried to squeeze her big body into his tiny carrier just to be near him! Abby and Elmo enjoy treats, though they’re still learning the fun of toys. Abby has even started picking up commands, like “sit.” With patience, love, and a little training, these two will continue to blossom together. Abby and Elmo’s combined adoption fee of $435 includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, microchips, and a wellness visit at Phoenix Mountain Animal Hospital.
