My story

MEET BERT! This Bert is looking for his Ernie! Berit is around 8 years old and came to City of Elderly Love Rescue from Philadelphia's animal control shelter after he was found as a stray. He became the shelter’s longest-term resident due to his spicy behavior, which is typical for Chihuahuas in high stress settings like shelters. Thankfully, his foster parent saw potential in this 7.5 lb. terror and brought him home for foster care. Within a few days, Bert was soliciting attention and giving kisses! He still comes with a side of spice, but now that he's settled and decompressed, we've also gotten to know his goofy, loving, big personality! The nice thing about Bert is that he's an excellent communicator and it's hard to miss when he's not comfortable. He will growl and show his teeth to new people that approach him, especially if they approach too quickly or in busy settings, but he also warms up well with time - especially with the use of treats! It took his foster 3 days of time, treats, and patience before they could pet him and properly leash him. Prior to that they had to toss high value treats to him and lasso Bert at a distance to go on walks. Despite this initial behavior—Bert is NOW actually a big cuddle bug and quite loving to his inner-circle friends! Bert currently lives with two large dogs in foster care and does well seeing other dogs on walks. Bert’s favorite things include treats, mealtime, walks, and cuddling under the covers in bed. He would love a home where he can cozy up to his owner and binge your favorite show with you on streaming. Bert also lovingly chirps and mumbles sweet nothings to you when he wants extra attention. He may have some behavior quirks in the beginning but he’s so worth the time and effort it takes to earn his love. Could you be the Ernie to his Bert? Reach out to meet Bert today! Bert is available for adoption through City of Elderly Love. He is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. He has been fully vetted since coming to the shelter. While it requires no treatment at this time, he does show to have high alkaline in his urine and may require a prescription urinary diet to avoid urinary crystals. Other than that, Bert is in great shape and has lots of zest for life! Interested in adopting him? Visit cityofelderlylove.org to complete an online adoption questionnaire!

If you have any questions or would like to adopt BERT, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
