My story

Rubi arrived at the Front Street Shelter in Sacramento with a fractured leg, likely from being hit by a car. Thanks to the shelter staff and the funds provided by Friends of Front St Shelter, Rubi's leg was successfully repaired by the exceptional orthopedic surgeons at Summit Veterinary Surgical Services. Although she was available for adoption through the shelter, Rubi did not attract much interest from the public and felt terribly lonely in the kennel setting. Since we have successfully assisted many shepherds with their orthopedic recovery, we decided to bring Rubi into our care so she could complete her recovery in a foster home. This sweet, energetic beauty has captivating doe eyes and loves spending time with both people and dogs. When given the chance, she would be playing, bowing, zooming around, and wrestling with the shepherds in her foster home. For now she sits at the fence of her side yard, sticking her head through the wrough iron for licks and wagging her tail in anticipation of when she can play with them. Her outside time is limited for potty breaks and quiet time to play with her own toys since she's on crate confinement for another four weeks, pending her final X-rays and clearance to transition into full puppy life by early October 2025. Four weeks post-surgery, her leg is stable and healing well, and she is bearing full weight on it.  Full of life and excitement, Rubi loves snuggling with her foster family when she's out of the crate. She adores treats and belly rubs with absolute joy. Splashing in her water bowl and bringing it for refills is super entertaining too. Rubi's very gentle taking treats which she adores but with her teeth coming she's currently very mouthy, needing chew toys, water bottles and assorted teething friendly objects to take the edge off.  She adores things that squeak, crinkle and she can toss and pounce on. This smart cookie has sit mastered and has an understanding of down and adores the low key game of touch. Her foster family has found ways to take her and the other shepherds in recovery on low-key excursions to public places, allowing them to experience the outside world while adhering to the protocols established by the surgical team for the best healing outcome. Rubi is likely to be a smaller shepherd as an adult, as she is quite petite for a five to six month old. She is superbly agile and has excellent command of her limbs. Her coat glistens beautifully with a red tint, complemented by her black muzzle. She is calm while riding in her crate in the car and remains quiet in her crate at home, although she perks up and listens attentively when she hears noises, giving a little bark of alert.  We are excited to share updates with you. Rubi will be ready to join a forever family in the next week to ten days, provided there is a commitment to continue her crate confinement until her surgeons clear her for full activity. We will handle her next check-up with the surgical team. Have you checked out our YouTube channel? We would greatly appreciate your support by subscribing, liking, and commenting on the videos we share of our adoptable shepherds in action. You can also follow us on Instagram,  Facebook, and our newest Threads account, where we post plenty of news and updates about our shepherds. As a foster-based rescue, ShepHeroes is always in need of fosters. There are many shepherds in our local shelters who require our help for a fresh start. Would you be willing to open your home and share part of your life to help these dogs find new families? You provide the love, and we will provide everything else! Saying "yes" today truly saves a life. Please complete this form: https://www.shepheroes.org/foster-form, and we will be in touch as soon as possible. We appreciate your consideration. ##2509887##
