My story

For Adoption: Mireille! Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. We at PDR believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process. To apply for adoption and for more information on our process and requirements, visit our website at https://pounddog.ca/adoption-info/. Meet Mireille ( pronounced mee-ray) who is an adorable 6yr old toy poodle weighing in at 7.5lbs. This little lady came from a backyard breeding operation in Quebec so her fosters felt it was fitting to give her a new, yet still French name to go with her fresh start. Mireille translates to “to admire or look at in wonder”. We may be biased but we think it is the perfect fit for this unique little dog. Her giant ears are always at attention and move all around her tiny head to show off her moods. Between those unique ears, her tiny face and large brown eyes her fosters have nicknamed her “the muppet” as she truly resembles a tiny silly puppet! Although Mireille was quite timid coming into rescue she has continued to wow and surprise her fosters with her resilience everyday. Mireille has been to the PDR vets since entering rescue and has had a few different health interventions. She has been given all of her age appropriate vaccines,as well as flea/heartworm prevention and parasite treatments. She has also been spayed and had a dental examination and cleaning. Coming into rescue she was already missing several teeth and has since had a few more removed. Rest assured it has not slowed her down when it comes to meal times. She is eating much better now that her mouth is no longer in pain. Her forever family should consider regular teeth brushing to help maintain and preserve the teeth that she has remaining. As mentioned above, Mireille has been working on growing her confidence since entering the rescue. In just a few short weeks she has gone from hiding in her crate to hunting for snuggles and pets at every turn. So far she has shown incredible resilience, and her fosters believe that with the right family her personality and independence will continue to blossom. That being said, her forever family should be aware that it will take time and patience for her to continue to come out of her shell. She is startled by loud noises and quick movements and should be considered a flight risk around open doors, fences, etc. Because of these facts Mireille would not be well suited to a home with children. Make no mistake, Mireille has thrived in all the new situations she has been introduced to. It would do her a disservice to shelter her from new experiences. She has been very successful in exploring new parks and hiking trails, and has even tried out a patio or too. While traveling in the car she does best while in her crate as it is her safe space. Mireille can be a bit nervous to do her business in new places because of this she would also be best suited for a quiet neighbourhood with her own fenced in yard to do her business rather than a busy urban location. She can also be quite vocal when she is startled. This little dog can have some big feelings! While her bark is not terribly loud, because of her vocal nature and how easily startled she is she would be better suited to a house rather than an apartment or condo. Once she is comfortable with you she will not be shy to paw at your hand asking for pets, or to grumble and bark at new sounds. Although her barks are not very loud it is a work in progress teaching her not to react to all the different sounds in the house. So far her training has been going very well. Mirelle is a smart dog who is picking up on routine quickly. She is an excellent walking companion with perfect leash manners and loves going out on her daily walks. She currently walks 1-2x a day for 45-60 minutes. She has been learning the commands “sit” and “crate” as well as “outside”. Her recall has also been starting to develop some consistency. Mireille is fully potty trained. Although she has not quite worked up to letting us know that she has to use the bathroom, she has not had any accidents in the house. She is also crate trained. Mireille loves her crate and uses it as her “home base” when she is feeling nervous or unsure. She should have access to her crate in her forever home at all times as she works on growing in confidence and comfort in her new space. Mirelle is currently living with two other small dogs. While she is amenable to sharing her space with them she has not been overly interested in play at this time. Because of this we think she would do just fine in a home with another older and lower energy dog or be perfectly content solo. While she has not been tested with cats or small animals she has not shown signs of prey drive in the wild and her fosters are confident that she could be introduced to other types of animal roommates without issues. This tiny lady has surprised her fosters everyday with her ability to adapt. Her sweet personality has begun to show itself more and more.. Watching her discover playing with a toy, or rolling around in the grass and being a goof has been such a delight. With time, patience and guidance Mireille’s forever family is in for a real treat!
