My story

Meet Leonardo Da Vinci—"Leo" to those who know and love him. A larger-than-life personality wrapped in a fluffy 7–8-year-old Pomeranian body, Leo is as bold and brilliant as his namesake. Rescued from an empty parking lot in Lake Station, Indiana, in the dead of winter, Leo's story is one of resilience, healing, and finding his place in the world. When Leo came into rescue, he was fighting a tough fungal infection. Thanks to dedicated vet care, a high-quality diet, weekly medicated baths, and a whole lot of love, Leo has made an incredible recovery. His coat has come back, his skin is healthy, and the odor is gone—but he will require lifelong attention with regular brushing to keep his skin and hair in top notch condition. Leo’s early days in foster care were challenging. He was scared, defensive, and quick to growl or bite. Who could blame him? Whatever he endured before rescue left a mark. But with patience and trust, Leo blossomed. He no longer bites, though he may still growl if he feels overwhelmed. He’ll need a guardian who understands dog body language, respects boundaries, and can reassure without forcing. Because of his sensitivity, Leo can’t be placed in a home with children. What Leo Loves: *Potty Time: House-trained and vocal when he needs to go out. He’s not pee pad trained but enjoys walks and marking his outdoor territory—never inside. *Personal Space: Leo has his own room with three beds (yes, three!), including a cozy, roofed cat bed. He loves basking in sunbeams and observing the world. *Flying Solo: Leo is not a fan of other dogs and needs to be the only pet. He’ll fiercely defend his space—solo dog status is non-negotiable. *Respect and Routine: Affection is welcomed—but on his terms. He’s not a cuddler, doesn’t like being held, and prefers short bursts of interaction from those who respect his cues. Leo is vocal and not shy about speaking up when his needs aren’t met—he’s got a big bark and isn’t afraid to use it. Because of this, a home with a securely fenced yard is required, and apartments or shared-wall living are not a fit. Leo is spunky, smart, and full of character. He’s not for everyone—but for the right person, he’s a one-of-a-kind companion who’ll offer loyalty, laughs, and love (his way, of course). Leo is neutered, micro-chipped, de-wormed, and up to date on vaccinations. Are you the one to give this pint-sized powerhouse the home he deserves? If you're interested in adopting, please fill out an application here: https://tinyurl.com/4u3tuy5c Due to the high volume of applications, our Adoption Coordinator will only contact the applicant that best meets the needs of the pet. If selected, we require a phone interview, virtual house check, and meet and greet with your entire family.
