My story

Meet BROOKE! Brooke is 9.5 lbs and estimated to be about ~5 years old. We guess she’s a rat terrier mix based on her look (EARS MUCH?!) but it’s only a guess! Brooke is such a sweet and easy dog. She is the kind of dog that would be perfect for a first time dog owner. She is so easy to integrate into a home! Brooke has a gentle personality and is great with other dogs! She’s currently in an apartment with 3 senior small chihuahuas and is very sweet with them. She likes to curl up next to them in the dog bed to sleep. Brooke likes to chill out when at home and can usually be found relaxing in her bed. She welcomes pets, cuddles, kisses and belly rubs at all times! She LOVES to cuddle! She enjoys being held and will rest her head underneath your chin to cozy up. If she wants to get your attention to be picked up or petted, she will tap your foot or leg with one of her paws which is quite adorable! Brooke is a great walking companion! She goes on daily errands in NYC with her foster and accompanies her on her midday walk around Central Park. She can easily walk 2 miles at a very good pace. Brooke also travels so well in a bag. She will happily go in the dog bag and will lie quietly without making a peep. She has been on the subway a few times and was perfect. Brooke is getting used to city sights, smells and routines and can be a tad wary at times on walks but she is gaining confidence by the minute. Within one day of her arrival in NYC, she went from not understanding how to walk on a leash to walking confidently. She mastered how to get in and out of the elevator after 3 trips and figured out how to go up and down the building entrance stairs in 2 tries. Now she wants to lead the way to go in and out of the building like she's done it her whole life! Brooke is completely house trained. She does all her business outside and is excellent about holding it inside. She only used the wee wee pad once at her foster's home and that was on the same day she arrived from Tennessee (she really had to go!) but since then, she will only do all business outside even if a pad is down. At night, Brooke sleeps in her own dog bed and will sleep soundly throughout the night. She doesn't need to be crated ever. One of the absolute cutest things about her is at night she will fall asleep on her back (with the help of a belly rub) and loves being tucked in with a blanket with her head on a pillow like a human. Brooke is also nearly silent and therefore would make an excellent city pup (she won't bug your neighbors!). She has not had any separation anxiety and will not bark when left alone, although of course, she greatly prefers to be around people just because she's so sweet and social and loves to be part of the action. The only time Brooke barks is when someone new comes into the home and she doesn't recognize them/their voice but once they hang around for a bit, she calms down and stops barking. She does not bark at people or other dogs on the street. Brooke also has not destroyed anything in the home. She does not seem interested in getting into things...except for one thing. We like to be completely honest with our adopters and fully disclose our dogs' criminal records. So, full disclosure: Brooke has a rap sheet for stealing treats. One time Brooke managed to get a bag of treats off of the (low) kitchen table when her foster wasn't on her game. We think Brooke jumped up on the nearby chair to access the table and quickly grabbed them. The treat bag was found bitten but unopened in her dog bed with Brooke looking only very slightly guilty as charged. You have been warned: watch your treats! Speaking of treats, Brooke has been enjoying trying new things! She loves chewy treats, freeze dried salmon bites and homemade sweet potato cubes. Sweet potato seems to be her new favorite thing! In sum, Brooke is a truly perfect, loving, easy and easy-going dog who simply wants to be loved! She is a good mix of both relaxed and spirited; not a couch potato but not super high energy. She's a dog who goes with the flow and is excited to find her new best friend(s) who will make her an integral part of the family and share their life with her! She's SO easy to fall in love with and when you meet her, we have no doubt you will too.
