Pool Party came to ACCT Philly on August 3, 2025, after being found as a stray curled up asleep on someone’s porch. He was easy to leash, transported calmly to the shelter, and quickly charmed staff with his friendly, puppy-like demeanor. This sweet, eight-month-old black mixed-breed boy is full of curiosity and joy. While still learning about the world, Pool Party already shows great promise—he greets people warmly, takes treats gently, and enjoys walks, playtime, and car rides. In play yards, he loves toys, especially squeaky balls, and will happily entertain himself. He can be a little selective about sharing his favorites, preferring to keep his special toy close, but he’s easily redirected with treats. He’s made progress in leash skills and enjoys meeting other dogs through fences or on-leash with polite manners. During a recent day trip, Pool Party was the perfect gentleman—quiet, well-mannered with other dogs, and eager to give kisses to new friends. He rides wonderfully in the car, enjoys belly rubs, ice cubes, and exploring new sights and smells. What a joy he was to spend the day with today! We started our adventure on Main Street in Manyunk. He was nervous for the first couple minutes of walking with opened up as the day went on. He was a little nervous with a lot of people walking by but very soon after the walk began he opened up to getting pets and gave lots of kisses to me and other people. He loves to sniff. He loves his treats. He didnt bark once the entire day. He loves riding in the car and sticking his head out the window. He did just fine as other dogs walked by. He looked at them but that was it, no lunging or pulling or agressipn. He is a great walker, no pulling. He loves ice cubes. He loves belly rubs. He is truly the sweetest puppy to spend the day with. We had a wonderful time together. Nothing negative to report about him at all! 08/08/2025 Behavioral Eval: Kennel Presentation: when I approached the kennel, pool party was sitting at the front. He was looking up at me with soft eyes and ears up. I took a step forward and he jumped up on the bars. Pool party was pawing at the gate with a fast mid level tail wag and some lip licking. I opened the kennel and put the leash in. He started pushing forward into the leash. He kept pawing at it so I initially got his paw stuck but was able to get it out. Once secured, he hopped out immediately. Leash Skills: Pool Party pulls moderately on leash. He is very focused on sniffing. He held his nose close to the ground. He held his tail mid level with some wags. Sociability: Pool Party was mostly interested in sniffing when walking on leash and playing when in the yard. He did allow some pets but quickly moved on. He does know sit and would wait nicely for his reward. He accepts treats gently. He continues to have a fast tail wag. Play: Pool Party engaged in play. He sat and waited for me to throw his toys. He would run fast to get them, sometimes bumping into things. He became particularly interested in a small blue squeaky ball. When he had that ball, he would take it away from me, lay down and chew on it. If I approached him with the ball, he would kind of just move away. I tried to trade him for a treat, sometimes he would drop the ball momentarily for the ball but then go right back to the ball. If I were to throw another toy, he would briefly chase that but return to his ball. If I attempted to touch him with the ball, he didn’t engage and would turn away. He ended up bringing the ball back in his mouth into the volunteer office. In the office, I threw treats on the floor to see if he would drop the ball. He dropped it for a moment and I was able to remove it with my foot and distract him with additional treats. Dog Interaction: Pool Party had a brief leashed and fence meet with another female dog. On leash, he had a high tail wag and his ears up. He pulled forward to the dog to sniff. The other dog became vocal so he created some distract but still looked toward her. Through the fence, the other dog continued to be vocal. Pool Party had a high tail wag, stiff body and avoided eye contact, moving his head away when the other dog was vocal. Pool Party disengaged and moved away from the fence. Return to Kennel: when I opened the kennel door, Pool Party initially stepped away but I redirected with slight leash pressure wand he stepped right in.
