My story

Socialization: Darcy is a sweet and happy 6 year old dog. She spends her days running around with the other dogs inside and outside or relaxing on the couch, if not getting belly scratches from the humans. At first, she was a little reserved meeting the other dogs and wanting her space. Over time, her confidence has grown where she is getting closer to the other dogs. It will take time for her to learn to play with other dogs. She is curious of the new smells and sounds in the neighborhood following the lead of the other dogs. Her recall is a work in progress while distractions are more interesting. Darcy has not had any accidents inside the house after learning to use the doggie door. She has very little access to the kitchen and we haven't witnessed any counter surfing. There are no cats or children in the house to know how she would react. Training: Darcy knows some commands like 'stay" and "no". Others like "sit" and "down" are a work in progress. She is well behaved inside and outside while going about her day. The only issue that we have had is separation anxiety when we leave the house. We use a travel crate and an anxiety shirt to help with comfort. We have consulted the vet and have other strategies that we are trying to ease her anxiety outside of medication. This will need to be a trial and error as well as consistency in her future home. Crate trained: Darcy eats in her crate with the door is open. We leave the door open all day for her to be curious, however she does not go near the crate. She rather be on the couch. She roams in the other dog's crates to investigate briefly. She is only put in her crate when we leave the house. She barks/whimper at first, but the anxiety makes her drool excessively. Leash trained: Darcy is pretty good on a leash. She is excited to go in the car for a ride or to take a walk. She travels well in the back seat in a car hammock. When walking, her excitement leads to a slight pulling which is controllable with her harness on. She loves to investigate all her surroundings by smelling and zig zagging. Activity level/requirements: Medium level. She had energy when outside with the other dogs. She roams, trots, and walks around being curious. She follows the lead of one of the other dogs as they smell the fence line. They dig in the dirt to keep cool, she follows their lead. They come inside, and she follows. When inside, she moves from the couch to the cool tile floor to her favorite chair. She definitely drinks water throughout the day and doesn't seem to have an interest in toys. Fence requirements: We feel Darcy would do best in a fenced in yard with a fence taller than 5 feet. She has springy legs and likes to hop over chairs, dogs and possible low fencing. If a fence is not possible, then walking her several times would be sufficient or visits to the dog park. Personality: Darcy loves her humans. She loves nothing more than belly scratches, and all around human attention. We have witnessed her behavior during a thunderstorm to be fine. She gets startled by unfamiliar loud sounds in the neighborhood. It is a brief moment before she returns to herself. Darcy is a positive and happy dog who loves life. She takes her time to blossom and show her true colors. Health history: Darcy is UTD on vaccinations, is spayed, and microchipped. She is on monthly heartworm preventative. The vet has discussed using Trazadone as a possible aid to her separation anxiety. Foster comments: Darcy is an affectionate and loving dog. She was tentative at first with other dogs but not with humans. She looks for affection from us from the minute she walked in the door. Since she has been with us, she is excited to greet us at the door everyday. Darcy is looking for an active family that has time to spend with her and continue to work on her confidence as well as her separation anxiety. More importantly, she wants a family that will reciprocate all the love and cuddles that she has to give. Foster Location: Morris, CT Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. If interstate transport is provided for your adopted dog, there will be an additional charge of $75.00 for the required Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI).  Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000-mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either fly their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000-mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog. Transports to far Western states, from Eastern states, may have additional restrictions.   ##2465528##
