Meet Ashby, a sweet boy who was a bit too much of a softy to return to the outdoor life. This love bug was originally part of the municipal shelter's TNR program, but after being released- it was discovered he was far too sweet to continue the street life! Due to this, he was beginning to be picked on by the other cats in his colony and was starting to get matted from the stress. One of his caretakers brought him to the vet for a checkup and shave down to discover he was positive for FIV. FIV(Feline Immunodeficiency virus) is a viral autoimmune disease that causes affected cats to have a harder time fighting off other infections, it is slow-progressing and may never affect a cat- but due to it being mistaken for a FeLV and a lot of misinformation surrounding the virus, cats like Ashby are considered unadoptable and are frequently euthanized. FIV is mainly passed to another cat through deep bite wounds (saliva directly in the bloodstream), not any wound. FIV+ cats can live with non-FIV cats too as long as they introduced slowly, as it does not spread through sharing toys, dishes, litterboxes or even sneezing. FIV+ cats can live just as long and healthy lives like any other cats without the virus when kept indoors.
If you have any questions or would like to adopt Ashby, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
