My story

Now’s the perfect time to adopt — I’m part of Clear the Shelters 2025, so my adoption fee is reduced by $50! Current Location: Frederick, MD Meet Diesel! Diesel is an affectionate and energetic 8-year-old Beagle who craves attention and companionship. He is sweet with people of all ages and has been gentle with both younger and older children. He enjoys long walks, climbing, sniffing, and especially loves squeaky toys and fetch. Energy and Personality Diesel is curious and active, always ready to explore or play. He adores human interaction and will lay close by or on you when he’s relaxed. He’s learning how to enjoy some solo time, but still prefers to be near his person. Diesel is vocal when bored or left alone, so he’ll need a family that can provide regular exercise, mental stimulation, and company. He’s startled by loud noises like trash trucks and may need patience with adjusting to unfamiliar sounds. Training and Behavior Diesel is working on house training and basic manners. He’s making progress with commands like "sit," "down," "leave it," and "no." He’s learning to walk nicely on a leash and doesn’t pull much. Diesel has had some marking indoors and needs supervision and routine as he adjusts to life inside a home. He is not crate-trained and barks persistently when confined. He is currently being tethered when unsupervised to prevent climbing and mischief. He cannot be left loose unattended at this stage. Social Life Diesel gets along well with other dogs, enjoys playtime, and will race for squeaky balls. He has shown some mild resource guarding but responds to correction. He appears to have limited indoor experience but is learning quickly. While he might enjoy being an only dog, he also benefits from having a playmate. Quirks and Special Traits Diesel has a nose for fun - he’ll "bop" squeaky toys with his snout and shakes stuffies enthusiastically. He’s smart and picks up on routines quickly, like heading for a drink before going outside. He’s still adjusting to indoor life after likely being an outdoor dog and needs patient guidance as he learns. Best Home Fit Diesel would do best in a single-family home or townhouse with a securely fenced yard. He needs a family committed to training, companionship, and giving him time to adapt. Due to barking, shared walls may not be ideal. He is not yet ready for crate time or to be left home alone for long periods, so a home where someone is around most of the day is best. Veterinary Care Up to date on age-appropriate vaccinations Neutered Microchipped On heartworm preventative On flea and tick preventative Treated for worms and parasites This dog tested positive for heartworm disease before arriving to the rescue. Heartworm disease is transmitted to a dog through a bite from an infected mosquito producing a positive test in six months. OPH will treat the dog and provide two weeks of recovery time prior to adoption. Potential adopters will receive detailed information on the disease and their role in completing the recovery process from OPH’s heartworm coordinator. With monthly preventatives, the disease is completely preventable. Read about heartworm disease here: Read more about heartworm disease at https://www.heartwormsociety.org/pet-owner-resources/heartworm-basics

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Diesel, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
