My story

All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, shots current (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies where applicable), dewormed, flea and tick treated, and microchipped.  * If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. Our adoption fees vary. Each biography will specifically list the adoption fee.Adoption fee: $750 Meet Birkenstock! This 2 year old Shih Tzu may look like a cuddly stuffed animal, but he’s the real deal— a calm, low-maintenance companion with a gentle heart, a non-shedding coat, and a growing sense of confidence.   When Birkenstock first arrived from the shelter, he wasn’t quite sure about indoor living. For the first few days, he mostly stayed outside or by the front door, quietly observing. But with patience and a steady routine, he’s warmed up beautifully to home life. Now, he enjoys lounging in one of the many dog beds, snoozing in his crate, or (his personal favorite) taking over his foster’s chair. In fact, that’s usually where he’s found each morning— perched like a little king, waiting to greet his person with tail wags and happy barks.   Birkenstock goes on three leisurely walks each day and is polite on leash, though he occasionally needs help untangling himself. Indoors, he has access to a courtyard via pet door and is making great progress with housetraining. He sleeps peacefully downstairs and enjoys a mellow daily routine of walks, naps, and quiet companionship.   This little guy isn’t demanding. He’s more of a soft presence—a quiet shadow who enjoys being nearby and will gently ask for attention by standing on his hind legs or rolling over for belly rubs. He’s recently begun climbing into his foster’s lap and giving sweet chin kisses, and it’s clear that with time (and without a jealous roommate dog), he’ll blossom into a full-time cuddler.   Birkenstock currently lives with another small dog and a cat, though the cat has kept a low profile. His doggy housemate isn’t thrilled about sharing the spotlight, so they mostly keep their distance from one another. While Birkenstock hasn’t been around kids, his gentle nature suggests he’d be just fine with respectful children.   He’s not a big chewer (though he may squirrel away a sponge or towel for safekeeping), and he rarely barks—except to politely announce visitors. He loves toys, but rather than fetch, he prefers to collect and store them in his crate, which he considers his special hideaway.   Ideal home? A calm, patient household where he can continue to build trust and soak up affection. Birkenstock doesn’t need much—just a comfy bed, some gentle pets, and someone to love.   Why Birkenstock? Because he’s the kind of dog who quietly becomes your favorite part of the day. Sweet, soft, and soulful—he’s a little guy with a lot of heart just waiting for his forever person to notice.      July 24, 2025, 12:07 pm

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Birkenstock, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
