Meet New Girl! She is a tiny 1 year old female Beagle weighting just 16 pounds and full grown! She is up for adoption in Chesapeake, VA (adoption area is within 1.5 hours of 23322). New Girl had a difficult start in life. She spent most of her puppyhood as a stray and then suffered horrific physical abuse as a young adult. Her injuries include a broken tail, dislocated knee, and missing and misaligned teeth. We aren’t sure if this happened all at once or over several months. She was saved by a local animal shelter and later transferred to Beagles to the Rescue to help bring her out of her shell. She is not surprisingly a bit afraid of people but curious and interested to be around them. She will take food from your hand and follow you around. BTTR is working with her on a training plan, has started her on medication and supplements to support this and she has made great progress in just 3 months. She LOVES other dogs, good with cats (sometimes tries to play but respects boundaries), does okay when left alone for 4-6 hours (foster has not tried longer), sleeps through the night, and is 90% housebroken (sometimes pees when very scared or stressed). She does not usually have accidents when left alone and is not destructive. She loves to play with toys and is very food motivated. She does NOT have a fear of thunderstorms or fireworks. She is looking for a home with a fenced in yard (she has not started leash training yet), another friendly playful dog (to help her burn some energy and build confidence), no children (she is fearful of sudden movements), and most importantly a kind patient person who is willing to dedicate the time and energy into training and working with her. She will sleep near you on the sofa and lay on the foot of the bed with you. She just needs some time to help overcome her fear of sudden movements and being captured and touched. She is spayed, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, had recent blood/urine/fecal panel, dewormed, heartworm negative, and on flea/tick/heartworm prevention. She is currently taking Prozac around $11 a month from Walgreens. Her first 2 private training sessions with her adopter will be provided FREE by BTTR BTTR offers a trail period to all of our adoptions to make sure we are the right fit!
