My story

Koala is a tender-hearted young pup with a sweet, sensitive soul. He may take some time to warm up to people, but he’s doing his best! At around 2 years old, takes treats with care and appears to warm up when offered a food incentive. Though he may pull on leash with some anxious zigzags, once in a quiet space, he softens and seeks comfort from his friends. Koala hasn't shown interest in toys or dog interaction yet, but this loving boy is clearly looking for a calm, patient home where he can fully blossom. Come meet him at ACCT Philly, open daily from 10 am to 6 pm VIDEO Koala sits x2: https://youtube.com/shorts/r6sIywEyc2w?si=cbXXapw6xuSyV1b8 BEHAVIOR Volunteer 7/22/25: Koala had a rather rigid body when I approached his kennel. He would take treats readily but when I attempted to open the kennel door he gave a low growl and backed up into the enclosure. I talked softly with him and attempted to go slowly but he continued to show signs of stress so I had another handler join me to observe. On the second attempt he didn’t appear to growl as before, but was lip licking and raising his paw. He did allow me to leash him after some time and we were able to head out into the yard. He proceeded to exit search and seemed quite rigid, except when offered treats, which he seemed to happily accept. I did not bring him into a yard or drop leash with him, but I didn’t have any issues returning him to his kennel. Staff 7/22/25: Koala was alert barking with a mid level tail and was sniffing the leash before allowing me to secure it. he pulled minimally on his way out and stopped at the treat bin for a quick snack. in the yard Koala sniffed me with a wagging tail. he likes to climb and explore the yard, going under and over the benches. he knows sit and was a bit snatchy with treats but if i did not have anything it was hard to keep his attention. 07/21/2025 staff notes: Kennel presentation: He was sitting at the front of the kennel, ears forward and erect and eyes wide and soft. Took treat gently. Easy to leash. Leash skills: Pulls hard on the leash, did zigzag side to side and back back-and-forth and, and whine. Took him into the pen and drop the leash, tail down, ears pasted back, lip licks, wide soft eyes. Sociability: Came to me when prompted, avoided eye contact, I sat down and he came to me and leaned on my leg. I touched him all Over including his ears and mouth. He was unfazed, and took treats gently before and after. Play: no interest Dog interaction: none Intake exam: Light restraint worked well, he is good motivated and ate peanut butter and spray cheese throughout the exam. Estimated to be about 2 years old. Did light leash muzzle while feeding peanut butter, he did some head whips when being vaccinated and easily recovered. Did not microchips since that requires more restraint, that should be done in surgery. Return to kennel: Easy Color level: experienced gold 07/20/2025 staff notes: At the front of the kennel, taking fresh pet gently from my hand. Low growling when I stop feeding. 07/20/2025 medical staff notes: unable to check in due to behavior, we attempted to get him on the scale but he panicked and began thrashing. Very tense and wary, go slow ACCT Philly is located at 111 West Hunting Park Ave in. We are open for adoptions 7 days a week. Please visit www.acctphilly.org/adopt for details.
