My story

Meet Apollo! Apollo is an 8 month old Great Dane mix who was pulled as part of “Angel Retreat’s ACCT’s of love” program, due to suffering from Parvo virus. We stepped in and provided Apollo the immediate medical care he needed as well as lots of love and supportive care, and he was soon cleared from parvo by our veterinary team. Apollo, however, was still not acting right post-parvo and was clearly suffering from additional issues while trying to get settled in his foster home. He would yelp in pain while getting up and laying down, and was reluctant to move his body much at all, especially his head. After some extensive diagnostics we found out that Apollo has an auto-inflammatory condition known as Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy. This extremely painful condition has an unknown etiology, but causes inflammation in the growing bones of puppies. The pain induced by this condition can continue to occur until the growth plates close between 1-2 years of age. Luckily, during active episodes, we can medically manage Apollo’s pain and help him be as comfortable as possible. Ultimately, Apollo is expected to live a very happy and full life, with the only concern being possible long term joint issues due to disruption in growth plates associated with the disease (related to lack of blood flow). Apollo has been vaccinated, but with this condition future vaccinations need to be carefully discussed with a veterinarian. Vaccines can trigger episodes, so titers may be suggested as an alternative to ensure antibodies are present to protect against disease. Apollo will require a family up to the task of providing him the ample physical and mental exercise and training that all puppies require. He loves other dogs, loves people, and is a truly wonderful boy who deserves the best in life! If you are interested in being considered for them please apply on our website at www.angelsretreat.org 💕🐾 Apollo Quick Facts: -Currently weighs 42 pounds -Has lived with other dogs and kids -Interested adopters will be educated about his condition, though we don’t expect this affect his life long term -A lovely boy!

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Apollo, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
