If Disney wrote a redemption arc for a traumatized little goblin who learns to love again… it would still fall short of Polly— and, yes… this is THAT kind of story. Polly didn’t come into this world with a silver spoon. She came in swinging and scrambling through survival with a brain full of static and a heart that had no idea what safety felt like. She landed at the Humane Society of the New Braunfels Area right after Christmas and, while everyone else was posting holiday selfies in matching pajamas, Polly was in a kennel learning how to disappear. She wasn’t wagging her tail. She wasn’t giving sad eyes. She was just… shut down. A ghost of a dog. The kind of quiet that doesn’t ask for help anymore.People walked past her like furniture. The golden retrievers got adopted. The doodles got bows. Polly got a bite label. Not because she’s bad, but because fear in a shelter gets you filed under “difficult…” and difficult dogs don’t make it to the happy ending part of the story— yet Polly decided she’d write her own ending. She got pulled into foster care and began the long, awkward process of becoming a dog again. A real one. With opinions.…and zoomies. …and an irrational fear of chickens (yes, chickens… please don’t ask).Today, Polly is a little over a year old and 100% a choose-your-own-adventure mutt. Lab? Pit Bull? Emotional support cryptid? She’s whatever you need her to be and, now that she’s decided life might be worth living, she’s thriving. She is: • GREAT with cats • Obsessed with her dog friends • Scared of poultry • A flight risk for the first few weeks (think: Olympic-level fence gymnast) • And learning (very slowly) that humans might not all be villainsShe will never be the dog that comes home and instantly curls up in your lap like a Hallmark movie, but give her time and she will become the dog who leans into your ribs like she’s trying to merge souls. She needs: • A securely fenced yard (seriously, we are not kidding) • A home with another balanced, friendly dog • A human who doesn’t need instant gratification to feel loved • Someone who finds joy in the slow, quiet moments • An experienced and competent handler Polly’s love isn’t free, but you can earn it and, when you do, it’s the kind of love that undoes you. The kind that reminds you what resilience looks like and the kind that turns a shut-down shelter ghost into someone’s reason to rush home at the end of the day.She isn’t easy, but if you’re the kind of person who believes the best things in life are earned, or you find meaning in the slow build and in those tiny, silent victories, then Polly isn’t just your dog. She’s your mirror, your reminder, your once-in-a-lifetime because, one day (not right away, but one day), she’ll crawl into your lap, melt into your chest, and exhale three lifetimes of fear.…and that will be the moment, you’ll realize you didn’t just save her— you became the person she was waiting for all along.I am currently in a foster home and not at HSNBA, if you are interested in meeting me, please contact the nice folks at HSNBA so they can put you in contact with my foster family to set up a meet & greet.
