Meet Cooper – A Pint-Sized Powerhouse with a Heart of Gold! 1-Year-Old | Neutered Male | JRT/Chihuahua Mix Say hello to Cooper, a 1-year-old Jack Russell Terrier/Chihuahua mix (best guess!) who's bursting with personality, charm, and just the right amount of sass. Fully vetted and neutered, Cooper is ready to find a forever home that can keep up with his playful spirit and continue helping him grow into the amazing dog he’s already becoming. Why You’ll Love Cooper: Cooper is full of spunk and energy—always ready to play, go for a walk, or zoom around the yard. He’s smart as a whip, already knows “sit,” and is currently learning “shake.” His recall is impressive for a young dog, and he’s very responsive to redirection, even when he gets a little too bold (like thinking he can take on a train!). Social Skills: Cooper is being fostered with a mixed crew of dogs big and medium and fits in beautifully. He adapts well to different play styles and loves a good game of chase or wrestle. He does show some resource guarding, so care needs to be taken with high-value treats or toys— for example he can take treats nicely when they’re handed out evenly but may get snappy if one is dropped on the floor. With cats, Cooper’s learning curve has been encouraging. He will chase shy or fearful cats, but he’s showing positive engagement and curiosity with confident, social cats. With time, he’s learning to play more appropriately. He has never hurt a cat, he is simply learning that they are neither squirrels or more tiny dogs! Crate and Handling: Cooper came into foster care with clear signs of past mistreatment—especially around crates—but thanks to patient and positive training, he now goes into his crate calmly when offered treats and is building trust every day. Behavior: Like many small dogs, he can be snappy when startled or unsure but he has never bitten or broken skin. He thrives with structure, calm energy, and clear boundaries. He is learning house training skills as previously he was crated for significant parts of his day but is learning to ask to go out nicely. He walks well on a harness or leash and collar. Cooper may warm up to men slightly more slowly but has shown a positive response to each man he has met so far. When the day is done, he loves nothing more than a sleepy snuggle on the couch! Kids and Families: Cooper is currently fostered with a dog-savvy 6-year-old and does well in that environment. However, we recommend he go to a home with older children or kids who have previous experience with dogs and understand how to respect a dog’s space. As mentioned he’s not a fan of being grabbed or handled roughly. The Ideal Home for Cooper: Cooper will thrive in a home that’s active, dog-savvy, and patient. He’ll do great with another playful dog, a confident cat, or even as a solo pup with lots of human attention. He’s small but mighty, smart, funny, and totally devoted once he trusts you.
