My story

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Meet Gunner:  Your Adventure-Buddy in the Making Breed: While listed as a "Hound mix", he has the striking appearance and personality traits of an Appenzeller Sennenhund (would require a DNA test to confirm) Age | Weight: ~18 months old (estimated birthdate of 1/6/2024) | 48 lbs (confirmed) Energy level:  Moderate&#226&#128&#144to&#226&#128&#144high (loves activity, but settles nicely afterward, and is never too much) History: Came to rescue from a shelter where he arrived with no identification (no tags, no microchip). He came with only a collar, smile, loving personality, and apparently good health)  Why You’ll Love Gunner Swiss-style good looks: Characteristic of the Swiss mountain dog breed, Gunner has a beautiful tri-color coat, white-tipped tail, white paws, and those irresistible caramel “eyebrows". We often hear "That is a gorgeous dog!" from people he meets.  Smart & eager to learn: Already mastering commands such as "sit", "stay", "down", "shake", "drop-it", and more, he's quick to pick up new cues, although he hasn't quite figured out "Vacuum up your own hair" yet, but we're working on it.  Kennel champion: Unlike many mountain dog breeds, Gunner loves his crate. In fact, if you fall asleep before putting him in his kennel, you may wake up in the middle of the night to find that he has put himself in his kennel. He is content to be kenneled during the day too, whether you're leaving, or just giving him (or yourself) a break. That being said, left to roam unsupervised, Gunner is a curious explorer. He's been known to counter-surf for food scraps or dish sponges. Pushing food back is not a solution as he's agile enough to jump clear onto a counter like he's a cat. If there is nothing accessible, he behaves himself well.   Dog-friendly family guy: He thrives with the resident 10- and 13-year-olds and playtime with canine pals. While his energy may be a lot for mellow dogs, he's polite and non-aggressive...just persistent. Breed tendencies suggest keeping an eye out for possible herding behavior with very young children, though none have been observed while in our foster care.   Velcro heart: Gunner is naturally suspicious (not fearful) of new people or unfamiliar objects, like this one charcoal grill he thought was going to get him. Once he is properly introduced and gets his sniffs in, he morphs from cautious to cuddly and will expect head rubs and "butt taps" while giving full-body lean-ins against his new friend.   The Perfect Home Active lifestyle: Gunner enjoys his daily walks (usually one or two). Inside, he loves playing chase (both directions!) and enjoys hide-and-seek or retrieving just about any toy that can be thrown around the house.  Space to roam: While he's done well in a home with leash-only outdoor time, a fenced yard would likely be a very special treat for Gunner to get up to full speed. Due to his active nature, apartment life is not ideal unless offset by a committed and active daily outdoor routine.  Continued training: He’s a fast study and loves positive reinforcement. With consistent training, he could truly shine as he loves to be challenged and learn new things.   Health & Vetting Gunner will be neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and fully vetted on 6/30. You're welcome to apply and schedule a meet-and-greet before or after that date. He'll be ready to move into your home as soon as he clears his post-surgery recovery. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.Interested in adopting this lovable animal? Please go to our website www.wagsmn.org and fill out an Adoption Application.  Once the application is processed, a Wags representative will contact you, answer any questions you may have, and set up a time/location for a meet and greet!  A home visit is required prior to adoption.  Thank you for choosing to adopt! Breed and temperament determination:  Wags & Whiskers Animal Rescue attempts to determine breed and temperament using a combination of looks, information provided to us at intake, and our experience with the animal while in our Rescue.  We do not guarantee this determination.
