Found near Frankford and Castor Avenues on June 17th, Edith arrived at the shelter after being brought in by a kind stranger who could not keep her. Though her past is unknown, she quickly charmed everyone with her playful spirit and affectionate nature. At the shelter, Edith has shown herself to be a friendly and cuddly companion. She enjoys leash walks, though she can pull a bit when excited—especially if other dogs are around. She's curious and loves to sniff her surroundings, and she’s learning to take leash pressure well. While she’s not very toy-motivated, Edith enjoys exploring the yard and even hopping up on a bench to share space with her human friends. She allows gentle petting all over, leans in for ear scratches, and is especially sweet during calm moments. She was barking and jumping at the front of the crate before I approached. When I came closer with the leash and told her I was coming to get her, she stopped jumping and had a low tail with sweeping wags. She was easy to leash and remove from the kennel. She easily walked on leash with me out of the kennel. When we got outside, there was another dog in one of the play yards. When we were passing that yard on the way out, both Edith and the other dog went to the fence. Both dogs were barking. Edith’s ears were down and tail was up. She was pushing her head into the bottom of the fence. It took a few moments to get Edith to continue following me out to the grass. I had to apply significant leash pressure as slight leash pressure allowed her to pull back to the fence. LEASH SKILLS Once I got her away from the fence, Edith pulled to the grass. I had to apply moderate leash pressure. She stopped to sniff the grass some. On the way to the yard, Edith pulled intermittently. Applying slight to moderate leash pressure worked. After playing outside, she pulled much less and only slight leash pressure was needed the few times she did pull. HANDLING Edith enter the large play yard. She jogged around and started sniffing. When I initially approached and started to pet her head, she walked away. I waited another moment and then went over to her again. I was able to pet her head, body, legs, and feet. She tolerated all of this with a low tail and sweeping wags. When I pet her along her back, she continued to sniff the fence. When I stood to her side and touched her legs and feet, she stopped sniffing and looked forward. Her ears were up and back. When standing, her tongue was out panting with relaxed open mouth. The only time she looked at me was while petting her head, both in the beginning and at the end of this handling assessment. At the end, she started to lean a bit into the ear scratches and then walked away. She did not continue to solicit petting at the time. Later, she did hop up on the bench with me. I was with another volunteer and she jumped up and down between us a couple of times. She allowed head pets and preferred to be a little distance away. I offered Edith a treat and asked for a sit. She did not sit and was uninterested in the treat. PLAY Edith did not interact with toys in the yard. I threw a ball for her and she did not chase it. She went over to the pool to take a look when we called her over to it; she did not drink water from it or get in. RETURN TO KENNEL Edith hopped into her crate as soon as I opened it and was easy to unleash. We offered her a treat and left it in her kennel for her. GOLD level walker due to fence interaction with another dog and pulling on leash.
