My story

** $335 in pledges for the rescue that pulls ** Beans ACCT-A-220359 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to medical concerns. Beans must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or FOSTER by FRIDAY, JULY 4TH at 10AM. Should Beans’ medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Beans may have been a little grumpy when he first arrived, but now this 19-pound boy is an absolute sweetheart! He was surrendered to the shelter along with another cat on June 18th. Their original owner passed away in October, and the person who had been caring for them could no longer keep them due to landlord restrictions. They described the pair as “good, housebroken cats” with medium energy. When asked about Beans' behavior, they said, “Beans eats, loves his treats, and loves to be rubbed.” His favorite treats are Temptations! They said Beans was shy around strangers and children, and he hadn’t been around other animals besides his buddy Pete, who has since been adopted. While at the shelter, Beans has not been eating much. Although he is obese, he has lost 1.5 pounds in a short amount of time, and lack of appetite can pose serious health risks for overweight cats. Unfortunately, Beans has developed an upper respiratory infection and a painful lingual ulcer, which may be contributing to his reduced appetite. Because of his medical needs, Beans is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or foster who can help him heal. Can you help this sweet boy feel better so he can enjoy his beloved Temptations treats once again? VIDEOS: Beans loves pets: https://youtube.com/shorts/2_4CIi3r7Zo?feature=share BEHAVIOR: Per staff 7/1: I met Beans shortly after he got his blood drawn. He allowed all over pets from a staff member and rubbed his head on her shoulder. It looked like he really wanted to eat his Temptations treats but his mouth is in a lot of pain so he didn't eat any when I was there. Per staff 6/19: Unable to conduct intake & vaccinations. PT was hissing, swatting, had tense body language and was very avoidant. TTA slip in kennel card. MEDICAL: 7/1 Vet Exam: Subjective: Cat was flagged today on walk-through for URI signs and lethargy. Objective: 1.5 lbs weight loss. Large ulceration on dorsal tip of tongue. Mucoid discharge crusted at nares, audibly congested. QAR, tried to eat Temptation treats during exam but mouth was too painful. Weight: 19 lbs. Assessment: Shelter acquired URI w/ lingual ulceration. Hyporexia to anorexia secondary to above +/- other. Lactate POC: 3.0 mmol/L Plan: FELV/FIV test: neg/neg. Unable to obtain full bloodwork at this time. Cerenia SQ SID x 3 days. Phlyte SQ SID x 3 days. Elura PO SID x 3 days. Buprenorphine IM BID x 5 days. Doxycycline PO SID x 14 days. 6/28 Vet Exam: Reason notes: 3 days Elura, recheck appetite: Assessment: Monitoring sheet cage-side showed patient has been mostly eating regularly over the past few days. 6/26 Tech Exam: Subjective: Flagged on cat walkthrough for poor appetite. Objective: Monitoring sheet for appetite- none, none, & poor last 3 days. QAR, very friendly. Seems shut down/stressed, but very receptive to attention. Eyes, nares clear. No congestion heard. Small amount of dry food eaten from bowl today. Assessment: Suspect hyporexia related to FAS in shelter. Plan: Start Elura 20mg/mL at 2mg/kg SID PO x3 days. Restart Gabapentin 100mg/mL at 0.5mL BID PO x 7 days. Continue to monitor appetite closely, monitor for signs of emerging URI. 6/24 Vet Exam: Subjective: Obese, overall health check. Objective: Eyes, ears WNL. Mouth - MM pink, mild gingivitis. Skin, LN WNL. Heart, lungs auscultate WNL. Abdomen - unable to adequately palpate given BCS. Neutered male in morbidly obese body condition. Sweet and tolerant boy. Assessment: Morbid obesity. Plan: Ok to remain available for all pathways from a medical perspective. Continue to monitor appetite closely while in shelter. 6/20 Intake Exam: Weight: 20.5 lbs. Body Condition Score: 8 - Obese. Eyes clear. Ears clean. Nose clear. Teeth white, gums pink and moist. Male, intact. Coat clean, no fleas. Bright, alert, and responsive, friendly. - Due to being significantly overcapacity with dogs and cats and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
