My story

Meet Bernice—a soft, anxious girl with a tender heart who is slowly learning that the world can be a safe place. Though she arrived at BARCS nervous and unsure, her foster family, who lovingly calls her Lily, has seen beautiful signs of progress as she begins to trust and open up in her new surroundings.Bernice is a sensitive soul who carries a lot of nervous energy, but her foster has witnessed small moments of courage that speak volumes. For example, on the Fourth of July, startled by fireworks, she bravely jumped onto her foster’s bed seeking comfort—a big step for her. Since then, curling up beside her foster at night and offering gentle kisses have become sweet new habits that show her growing affection.During the day, Bernice often keeps to herself, resting quietly in cozy corners or on her favorite bed. She doesn’t yet play with toys or seek much attention, but she is beginning to explore at her own pace. She enjoys short ventures into the fenced yard where she sniffs and prances before returning indoors to relax. These small moments are important milestones as she builds confidence. She is fully housebroken and respectful in the home, with no destructive behaviors. Although walks are still a work in progress and she can be hesitant in new environments, Bernice is learning to feel more comfortable with gentle guidance. When she is startled by loud noises or unfamiliar situations, she tends to freeze or flatten herself, but she looks to her foster for reassurance and support.Bernice gets along well with the resident dog, sometimes even snuggling up for comfort, and has calmly greeted cats with nose-to-nose sniffing—showing no signs of chasing or barking. While she hasn’t been exposed to children in her foster home, her foster family believes she would do best in a calm, adult-only household with predictable routines. This gentle girl is not ready to dive headfirst into the world but is eager to blossom with patience and love. Her ideal adopter will be someone who understands the value of slow progress, who can offer a steady hand and a quiet heart. A secure yard would be a wonderful place for Bernice to continue exploring and growing at her own pace.Bernice has been through a lot, but with every small step, her hope and trust grow stronger. If you believe that the gentlest dogs often have the biggest hearts, and you’re ready to be patient and loving, Bernice (known as Lily in her foster home) may be the p
