Luke

My story

Luke is a sweet, quirky dog who just wants to know his people are nearby, be pet often, go on a LOT of walks and sleep on the couch or a dog bed. He should be the only dog in the house, but can be around other dogs under supervision. The more people in the house to pet him and take him for walks, the better! Luke can be timid at times, even with people he knows. He can also randomly become startled when he is sleeping. His fosters suspect this is a result of something in his past. He overcomes this quickly and is right back to wanting to be petted. He LOVES his walks and will ask to be taken for one. We can only speculate as to why, but he is much better behaved on a leash with men than women. This can likely be addressed with training. His foster family takes him for 3-5 walks a day (4-6 miles) and he still asks for more. He has even come back from a walk with one person, and then goes to someone else when he gets home to ask for another! While he prefers walks, he does enjoy chasing tennis balls in the yard. He enjoys the fenced yard at his foster home, but if he is getting his walks a fenced yard is not necessary. The primary reason he is best as an only dog is that he does not eat his food all at once and will graze throughout the day. He has not been aggressive around other dogs, but does try to be dominant. Interestingly other dogs do not appear interested in interacting with Luke, but do not appear at all fearful of him. Luke is crate trained, but would prefer not to be in his crate. In his foster home he has been left out with run of the downstairs of the house when his fosters are away for a few hours and overnight with no issues. He whines when people leave (even if others are home) - and if we don’t come inside from the garage quickly enough for his liking after he hears the garage door when we return. Otherwise there have been no concerns or issues when his fosters leave the house. Luke does have a stubborn streak that he displays on occasion. On walks, this is typically a refusal to move away from something he finds interesting. Inside this can be either refusing to move or moving towards what he would rather do. For example, if he doesn’t want to go out again before bedtime he will go into his crate and lay down. Overall, Luke is a sweet, easy dog that just wants a forever home with people to love on him and take him for walks.
