My story

BAYOU Attributes: High energy Playful Crate trained Working on House training Will potty on a leash Dog friendly Does not like cats Likes to dig Good on car rides Adult only home preferred Not best for apartments Fence jumper Our first impression, upon meeting Bayou, was that he was a super friendly, carefree dog. He easily transitioned into our car, and remained calm the entire drive home. Once we arrived home and he met our 2 beagles, it became very apparent that, at just under 2 years old, he is still full of intense puppy-like energy. Immediately revealing his love of chase, the “zoomies”, his voice and a bit of rough housing, with his new dog friends, there was activity throughout the house! A brief backstory on Bayou was that his former owner allowed him to run free, outside. I have a feeling that he was in the company of other dogs, because all he knew and wanted to do was play and rough house. He would play relentlessly. We have been working on getting him to calm down and rest. Aside from playing with other dogs, he wants to be the center of attention, from all the humans that he meets. He has a huge personality and adores affection. He loves firm back scratches and belly rubs and this type of input has also helped him to calm down and he is now able to take naps! Bayou is smart, learns routines quickly and is definitely trainable. He knows how to sit on command and understands the word “No”. Bayou appears to be a blue tick beagle mix. He stands 16 inches tall and weighs around 27 pounds. He isn’t completely house trained and he doesn’t have any “tells” that he needs to go outdoors, so we take him out every 2-3 hours during the day, when we are home. In keeping that schedule, he rarely has accidents. He is crate trained for when we are away from home, sometimes up to 9 hours, and he has never messed in his crate. He will bark initially and does best when given a treat-filled frozen Kong when we leave. At night he is left loose in the house and will either sleep on the couch or the dog bed in the living room. Bayou is obsessed with food and will surf your counters for any chance to nab some food. He is not food aggressive and eats all of his meals next to the other dogs, without incident. He demonstrates great patience in sitting and taking his turn, when I am distributing treats to all three dogs. He enjoys bully sticks, frozen treats in a Kong toy, dog chew toys, plush toys that squeak and crinkle, and balls. He loves to be outside, walks well on a leash; however, once he picks up a fresh animal scent, in true beagle fashion, he will bark and pull with all of his might! Bayou is a skilled climber, so he would probably need a yard with a 5-foot fence. Bayou will bark like crazy when he hears or sees other dogs. I believe that this is pure excitement as he views meeting other dogs as another opportunity for play. He has never shown raised hackles or any form of fear with other dogs. He would probably do best in a home with another dog at a similar energy level or one that is very tolerant of his puppy antics. He would, however, not do well with cats, as that would be an endless game of chase for Bayou. Bayou loves all the people that he has met and he would probably do well in a calm home with more structured activity, such as long walks and food puzzles, and with older children. NOTE: Dog may be located in any of our six volunteer states (WI, IL, IN, OH, PA, MI).

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Bayou, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
