My story

Mel is a beautiful 3-year-old yellow Lab with the sweetest eyes and a heart full of potential. Until recently, Mel lived her life entirely outdoors as part of a backyard breeder, with very limited human interaction and no experience inside a home. As a result, everyday things most dogs take for granted—like walking on floors, going for leashed walks, maneuvering stairs, hearing the TV, or settling in a cozy dog bed—are all new and sometimes overwhelming for her. Even playing with a toy or taking a treat are new experiences she's still figuring out how to overcome. Mel is not your typical “ready-to-go” pup. She’s a quiet, observant girl who is just beginning to discover what it means to be a companion. She will need a very special home with patient, compassionate humans who understand that progress for her may be measured in tiny steps over weeks or even months. She may freeze up, hide, or retreat as she learns to trust her surroundings—but with love and guidance, we believe she will blossom into the wonderful dog she was always meant to be. An ideal home for Mel would be calm and predictable, with a family committed to helping her feel safe and secure. Having a like-minded, easy going and tolerant dog that'll help teach her may be a great source of comfort and confidence for her. Mel’s journey won’t be a quick one, but if you open your heart to her, you’ll get to witness the most rewarding transformation: a once-overlooked soul learning what it feels like to be loved.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Mel, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
