My story

Meet Mel B, a big-hearted Rottweiler with a goofy streak and a soft side that shines once she trusts you. Found by police on May 13th, Mel B has been adjusting to shelter life and is now ready to find a loving, adult-only home where she can continue to blossom. Though initially shy and unsure, Mel B warms up quickly with patience—and snacks. One volunteer described sitting quietly in her kennel, offering treats until Mel B gently took them one by one and even put her head through the leash on her own. Once outside, her whole demeanor changed. She lit up with joy, exploring grassy areas with curiosity and breaking into happy little jogs when on pavement—though she tires quickly and prefers alternating between short bursts of running and leisurely strolls. Mel B is a classic gentle giant. She enjoys sniffy walks, belly rubs, and all-over pets. She’s food motivated and loves squeaky toys, though she can be a bit picky about her toy selection. During her intake, staff noted her puppy-like energy and wiggly, joyful nature. She knows some basic cues like sit and down, takes treats enthusiastically (so tossing them is best!), and absolutely thrives when given attention, structure, and play. While she has made great progress at the shelter, Mel B can still be unsure with new people at first and shows some sensitivity to the leash in her kennel. For this reason, she’s looking for an experienced, adult-only home that can continue to help her build confidence at her own pace. With a bit of patience and a lot of love, Mel B promises to be a loyal, silly, and endlessly rewarding companion. Video: Mel B & Bando Meet: https://youtube.com/shorts/a2nVGI3rKaQ Behavior Notes: Per volunteer 5/20/25: She was shy at first and didnt wwant to come out so I sat in her kennel and held out my hand with treats in them, she came up to me and licked my hand and took the treats one after the ofher so then I held up the leash infront of my hand and she put her head through the leash to take the treat and out we went very easily. Once the leash was on her she was very comfortable and happy to be outside for the first time since she's been at acct . She's def a gentle giant . If you are on grass she likes to sniff a lot and just walk around wherever her nose takes her and if we switched to pavement she'd stop sniffing and go for slow jogs ( about a 12 min mile pace) .she's gets tired quickly so she only jogs for about 1 min and then walks for 2 and then jogs for 1 minute again , and then walks for 2 , but she's.very happy when she breaks out for that 1 min run . When we stopped and rested she took treats very easily and allowed me to give her rubs all over. When we came back in she hopped right in with no issue . I'd expect she'll come straight out tomorrow. Per staff 5/15/25: She did well for her intake. She is very food motivated so we put hotdogs pieces all over the floor and was able to fully check her in without any issues. Per staff 5/15/25: KENNEL PRESENTATION: Mel B was at the front of her kennel with a wagging nub and soft eyes. As soon as she saw the leash she backed all the way up and started baring teeth, growling and hard barking. I was able to toss some treats and reach in but she dodged the leash again. I decided to open the kennel half way, make her sit for a treat and quickly loop her. Once secured she came right out. LEASH SKILLS: Pulls very strong HANDLING : In the room, Mel B was showing all the puppy behaviors. She can be a bit wild and jumpy but was still somehow gentle and cuddly. She allowed all handling and was loose and wiggly. She takes treats very snatchy even with an open pal so toss treats. She likes anything and will eat everything. She knows sit and down and wiggled her entire body trying to contain her excitement. She was super goofy and playful and a treat to be around. She is a very good girl and an overall super gentle but great girl . PLAY: Engages in play TOYS: Loves squeaky toys – can be picky with her selection ACCT Philly is located at 111 West Hunting Park Ave in Philadelphia. We are open for adoptions 7 days a week.
