My story

What my friends at ACC say about me:I lived with children in my previous home.I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles!I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.Zhao Cai is very sweet but somewhat fearful. He was in the main kennel and approached to sniff treats. He allowed, and initially seemed to enjoy, gentle petting on the head and cheek-leaning in for cheek rubs and giving gentle head bunts. Then he began sniffing the assessor's gloved hand and along his forearm. When he sniffed the assessor's arm, he began to huff. After a bit more petting, he hissed. He continued to accept some petting, but also continued to hiss occasionally. It's possible he was reacting to the scent of another cat on the assessor's arm. The assessor washed his arms with soap and water, reapplied Feliway to his arms, crumbled up some treats and rubbed them on his arm as well, and re-approached Zhao Cai, who again sniffed the gloved hand but remained slightly reactive, with ears occasionally turning backward and pupils enlarged. The assessor removed the glove in case the vinyl was causing a reaction and applied more Feliway to his hand. This didn't seem to have a noticeably calming effect, although the hissing stopped. Zhao Cai remained somewhat wary. On the second approach, he was on top of his den. When another worker entered the room, he became aware and extra watchful and alert. Zhao Cai interacts with the observer, solicits & appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. No known history of behavioral problems. We recommend that he go to a home with some cat experience preferred and be well counseled in reactivity including possibly to unknown stimuli and scents. Primary Color: Black Secondary Color: White Weight: 10.4 Age: 1yrs 6mths 1wks

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Zhao Cai, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
