One year old Gretel’s journey hasn’t been easy. She and another Doberman were found dumped in Otero County and picked up as strays. It was obvious she had little to no human contact, but learned how to trust in the warmth of her loving foster home. When she first arrived, she was nervous and unsure, spending most of her time by the front door, hesitant to let her guard down. She barked at her reflection, unfamiliar noises, and other dogs. She was hesitant to be touched but would give lots of loving licks if you gave her your hand. After three months in foster care, with patience, love and a little training, Gretel is feeling more comfortable and settled. She loves her foster's kids (13 and 9) and now allows tickles under her chin, on top of her head, and hesitantly on her body. She has learned that touch can be comforting and feels good! She walks well on the leash (but is hesitant to allow you to put it on), is crate trained, doesn’t jump, and knows how to sit. She responds to no, go potty and go poop. She learns very quickly and is good at learning from repeated behaviors. She is highly motivated by treats and frozen Kongs! Gretel is a very wiggly dog and uses her whole body to communicate and play. She is wary of cats and barks at them but is showing improvement. She loves a cozy spot of her own (a crate or a quiet corner out of the way of household activity) and likes to go to bed early! She is suspicious of strangers but now rarely barks at other dogs or people while on her walks. She needs mental stimulation – it works well to feed her with a treat ball, give her plenty of toys she can chew on and throw around. She loves sunbathing near the sliding glass door. Gretel needs patience and understanding in her new home and the ability to adjust at her own pace. She prefers a calm household with structure and routine. Lastly, someone who will celebrate her small victories—every step forward is a big deal for this girl! A $300 adoption fee applies. Please go to http://www.dobermanrescuenm.org and complete an application.
If you have any questions or would like to adopt Gretel, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
