My story

If you would like more information about Camelo or are interested in adopting him, please send an email to corine@barriodogs.org Camelo is a one-of-a-kind dog with a spirit that’s as bright as his personality. He's playful with a capital "P"—his favorite thing in the world is a good tug-of-war match with his foster buddy, who’s about the same size and age as him. Watching him run is a sight to behold: he hops around like a little rabbit, full of energy and joy. When he’s not playing, he’s all about affection—he’ll lean in for pets and snuggles like he’s never had enough. While he’s a big bundle of fun, Camelo is also incredibly well-mannered. He goes into his crate at night without fuss, and he’s super chill about his routine. He doesn’t whine or complain, just quietly settles in and gets comfortable. Camelo’s backstory isn’t an easy one—he was hit by a car as a puppy—but he’s come through it with an impressive amount of resilience. He’s recovering well after surgery and is now in rehab to rebuild the muscle in his hind leg. Having a swimming pool would be ideal for him right now, as the water therapy would help him continue to strengthen that leg. Despite the rough start, Camelo is full of love and gratitude. He’s not demanding or high-strung; instead, he’s calm and steady, enjoying the simple pleasures like lounging in the front seat of the car for a nap. He’s great with my other dogs—a 51 lb male retriever and a female GS (over 70 lbs)—but he does have some issues with large male dogs (especially those over 70 lbs) in smaller spaces. He's still working on that, and I know with time and patience, he'll get better at it. Though I have three cats at home, I typically keep my fosters separate from them, so I haven’t introduced him yet. However, based on his behavior, I’d suggest a household without cats or one with an experienced handler who can manage the introduction. Camelo’s still young, still learning, but his goofy, sweet, and affectionate personality makes him a total joy to have around. He’s looking for a family that can appreciate his quirks, offer him the support he needs as he continues to heal, and share in his love for life.
