** $185 in pledges for the rescue that pulls ** Roberto is a CODE RED For 10am 2/5 Interested foster through rescue! Roberto is a 4-year-old male who came in as a stray on 2/2. The finder noted that he saw Roberto get hit by a car. Roberto is paralyzed in his hind legs and is urgent need of placement. On 2/3: Roberto got a medical shave. Per an exam on 2/3: “Handle with caution will bite. Hind limbs dragging and harboring them. seems painful. Reportedly hit by car, not weight on hindlimbs and appeared painful since intake. In exam room, patient did not bear weight on hindlimbs, could wag tail apparently normally, urinated (unclear whether voluntarily or not). Diffuse severe dental and periodontal disease, multiple teeth loose, gum recession, bone loss, pink and moist mucous membranes. Could not assess ears due to behavior. Grade 1-2/6 systolic murmur ausculted. Could not assess abdomen due to behavior. Ambulatory in thoracic limbs only, diffusely moderately muscle wasted, no pain observed during spinal palpation until the tail base. Bilateral grade 3/3 medially luxating patellas. Matted and dirty coat, 1.5cm slightly compressible round dermal mass, 1-2cm noncompressible dermal mass dorsal to anus, severe flea infestation with dermatitis and scaling at the tail base. Hindlimb paralysis, no withdrawal reflex in hindlimbs, some tone in hindlimbs, responds to light stimulation in tail, normal motor function in tail. Sedated radiographs of hindlimbs and pelvis: multiple fractures in pelvis, some narrowing of intervertebral disc space in thoracic spine. CBC/chem: nonregenerative anemia (HCT 26%), mild lymphopenia, high glucose, high ALT” Staffs overall assessment was: Hindlimb paralysis, possibly spastic and possible urinary incontinence - trauma vs other Severe flea infestation Underconditioned and muscle wasted 1-2/6 left-sided systolic heart murmur - myxomatous valve disease vs stress vs other Bilateral corneal opacity - cataracts vs sclerosis Possible dental/periodontal disease Per an exam on 2/2: “Dog got up and walked to try to bite. Severely matted hind limbs. Ears are matted, teeth are crooked and worn down. Coat is severely matted. Hind legs are dragging and barely walking.” Per staff 2/2: “Pt tried biting several times and placed an e-collar for safety to be able to examine but kept taking it off. Utilized towels to try to handle it but was trying to jump off the table to bite. He was reported to be injured and is showing clinical signs of pain. I suspect most of his behavioral issues are due to pain and being severely matted. Pt is to be handled with caution - pt is painful on lower back and hind legs mainly RHL.”
