My story

Kenji – A Gentle Heart with a Belly Made for Rubs At just under 2 years old and around 53 lbs, Kenji is the kind of dog who makes you want to protect him from the world. He’s a tender-hearted boy with a gentle, innocent spirit—and a deep love for belly rubs. (So much so that most of his pictures are upside down… because he is!) Kenji can be a bit timid at first, but once he feels safe, he absolutely blossoms. He *thrives* on affection and will gladly melt into your lap or roll over for some love. Since arriving at the shelter, Kenji’s been learning how to walk on a leash. He’s made great strides—sometimes he pancakes when he feels unsure, but for the most part, he walks nicely with a loose leash and is getting braver every day. He’s also a little unsure about the car and usually needs a gentle boost to get in, but once inside, he rides quietly and calmly. This sweet boy also adores toys and will bounce joyfully around the yard with them like a big, floppy puppy. He’s treat-motivated, eager to please, and so ready to keep learning with a patient, loving family by his side. Kenji has tested well with other dogs and enjoys playtime—he’s definitely the more submissive type. What he needs most is a home that will continue helping him build confidence and show him the world isn’t so scary after all. If you're looking for a truly kind-hearted, goofy, and lovable companion, Kenji will fill your home (and your lap) with love. As always, we strongly recommend bringing any resident dogs to the shelter for a meet and greet with potential new family members to be sure it's a good match. If bringing a dog for a meet and greet, please bring proof of up to date rabies, bordetella, and DHPP vaccines. To meet your future pet, come to Guilford County Animal Services between 12 and 4 any day except Tuesday!
