Dog Name: Bonnie Lynn Breed: mountain cur mix Sex: female Age: ~4 years old Weight: 66 lbs Medical Needs: She takes daily Dasuquin and omega-3 supplements to help her joints. These supplements cost approximately $35.00 per month. You can find them on Amazon or Chewy and set up an autoship! The supplements help with her arthritis in both knees and the beginning of hip dysplasia in both hips. In 2023, she had surgery on her right knee to repair a torn cruciate ligament. So, she has some hardware - a metal plate and screws to hold everything in place. This does not slow her down at all! Housebroken: Yes! 100% Crate Trained: Yes! She prefers the sturdiness of a large industrial crate. Good in the car? Yes! She loves sticking her head out the window! Good on a leash? Yes! She does need a prong collar, or she will pull, and she is quite strong. She listens well and is easily redirected when sniffing for a little longer than necessary. Energy Level: She will play hard (sprinting after a ball, chasing/wrestling with her foster brother, etc.) for about 10 minutes, and then she is down for some water and a nap, either on the couch or in the sunny yard - whichever is nearest you. She enjoys leashed walks too! Need a fenced-in yard? No - as long as you can take her for daily walks. She needs to keep her weight down to help her joints. It would be helpful to have a fenced-in yard, though, since she does like to run hard. She definitely should not be off-leash without a fence because she will chase small animals (rabbits, squirrels, cats, etc.) Dog Friendly: Yes! In public, she gets along with or ignores most dogs. In her home, she is good as long as other dogs listen to her corrections and give her space when she needs it. Some dogs might require slower introductions than others, but she will get along with everyone eventually. If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive home? No, but she would love a friend! Bonnie has lived with at least two other dogs most of her life, and she likes to have a buddy with which to play. Also, she prefers having a friend to keep her company while you are not in the house. Cat Friendly: No! She will try to taste them, as well as any other small creatures. Kid Friendly: Yes! If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? Dog-savvy kids 8+ (who will know when she needs a break) are best for Bonnie. Sometimes when there are littles in her face for a while, she gets overwhelmed and will back away. Kids and/or parents will need to be able to recognize when she needs to take a beat. She is also a solidly-built dog, and she gets excited to see her people (occasionally jumps/bounces, smothers with kisses/hugs), so she could accidentally knock down smaller children. Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them: Bonnie Lynn is an absolute sweetheart! She loves her people. Every time she sees you, her little nub tail starts to wiggle so hard it turns into a blur and her tongue starts lapping at the air, preparing to give kisses. When you kneel down to greet her, she puts her head right on your chest and looks up into your eyes with her beautiful, soulful brown eyes just licking away, trying to kiss your whole face. Bonnie has come so far since we first got her! She was, understandably, very anxious and nervous in the beginning. She had just lost her dad (who she loved dearly) and then had to be separated from her mom and four-legged sisters. (It was no one’s fault. Just an unfortunate set of circumstances.) We had to get her used to her crate again, used to being alone, used to being in public around big, male dogs. She needed trazodone for her crate anxiety because she kept trying to break out and eventually did, which is why she needs an industrial. She couldn’t be around our large, male Great Pyrenees and would growl and bark at large bully breeds and German shepherds when out in public. She was uncertain at adoption events so she would growl if another dog got too close to her while she was drinking from the water bowl. But now? She goes into her crate as soon as we ask - no medication needed. Sometimes she even goes in there to chill on her bed when the door is open. She hasn’t reacted to another dog (water bowl or not) in a very long time and can now be around my Great Pyrenees - they go on walks together, ride in the car together, and hang out at beer gardens together. She goes to adoption events like a pro. We can take her to beer gardens, coffee shops, and farmer’s markets - no problem! She even had her first sleepover recently when we had to go out of town for a wedding, and she settled in quickly and had a great weekend! We are so proud of her progress! She will still most likely need time to adjust to her new surroundings (as any dog or person would) so she can trust she isn’t going anywhere. We recommend a two-week shut down. But if you can be patient, stick with her, and give her what she needs, you will never regret it. She has so much love to give. She is one of the chillest, most loyal dogs that I have ever met.
