Dog Name: Ernie Breed: Pit Bull Terrier Sex: Male Age: Senior Weight: 68 and gaining Medical Needs: Ernie, being an older guy does have some old guy issues. He has arthritis and takes daily medication to manage pain. Gabapentin 300 mg twice a day. Carprofen 50 mg twice a day. Joint Supplements once a day. Librela injections may also be needed in the future to manage his arthritis (pending bloodwork recheck). **Unaltered. Ernie will need his bloodwork rechecked in May to see if he is a candidate for surgery. Bloodwork recheck will be covered by GRR at Avenue Veterinary Clinic in Milford, DE. If neuter is recommended at that time, it will be covered at one of the clinics we use. Housebroken: Yes. He does drink and urinate a lot, so he needs to go out more frequently. Crate trained: He will go in his crate but he’s not happy about it. It’s not the couch Ernie can occasionally put the brakes on, but will follow with a snack. Ernie doesn’t have accidents in the crate overnight and he will let you know when he needs to go potty. He would do best in a home where he isn’t left alone for long periods of time. Good in the car: Not at all he wants to be with you and try to get to your lap. He’s not the ride shot gun and look out the window kind of fella. It’s best to crate him or use a seat belt to keep him secured. Good on a leash: Yup Energy level: Low. Ernie is a very chill dude who prefers the comfort of the couch. He will occasionally chase a ball. Likes chew toys. Need a fenced in yard: No, leashed walks are just fine. Dog Friendly: Yes! He LOVES everyone. Would prefer an older, less energetic dog pal. Ernie’s mind and body aren’t on the same page, he doesn’t quite understand his body can’t keep up with younger pups. If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive homes? No Cat Friendly? Yes (cat in foster home is very dog savvy). Kid Friendly: Yes If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? Teens and up. Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them? Ernie was on borrowed time at a Baltimore County shelter. Old, skinny, and just not looking good. Ernie was time stamped for Christmas Eve. We couldn’t let his story end there, not like that! Ernie got a Christmas miracle. We took Ernie in, our hearts knowing he might not have much time. But what time he did have, he would have warmth, comfort and most importantly, love. To everyone’s surprise Ernie got a solid bill of health from our vet. Poor guy was just starved, and has some arthritis. He has a tremendous appetite, and has started meds to make him comfortable with those old bones. Ernie is an ABSOLUTE joy! He’s just truly happy to be here. He loves everyone and everything! People, dogs, cats and kids. He greets everyone with a sweetness, tail wags, and the biggest kisses. Ernie also LOVES the couch, dog beds, any sort of blanket and laps.
