My story

Gretta is 2-yrs-old and weighs about 23 lbs. We’re not sure of her breed mix, but we’re thinking possibly Westie or some other terrier type? Believe it or not, her mom was a 9-lb chihuahua! Her hair is straight and soft white and beige, and sheds very little if at all. Gretta has lived in one household her entire life, so she is somewhat under-socialized. She is very cautious and standoffish with strangers. She lacks confidence but is slowly getting past it and will improve with more gentle socialization. A new adopter will have to be patient with her and coax her to be closer. She likes other dogs after she knows she is safe with them, and she likes to play. Toys are also fun for her. But she’s definitely got that terrier prey drive, and will want to go after small animals like hamsters or newborn puppies and kittens, so we would not recommend a home with cats or smaller pets. Gretta is potty trained her foster home and uses a dog door. She may need some re-training to learn your routine and your expectations, but if you start out taking her to the desired pee spot, she will remember after a few trips. She is trustworthy. She’s not an escape artist, as she prefers to stick to what she already knows. She doesn’t have much experience walking on leash, so she will need some encouragement to get used to leash-walking, if that’s something you want to do. She is very healthy and strong, and I’m sure she will enjoy it once she gets used to it. Gretta is a kindhearted and gentle soul, and she will cuddle up if encouraged. She is a sweet girl who prefers to sit next to her human, but not necessarily directly on your lap (which is good because she’s 23 lbs!). She cooperates well with a kind and gentle voice, but yelling will scare her, and it may take her awhile to regain composure. She’s accustomed to sleeping in the big bed at night with all the other dogs; she does not like the crate at all. Gretta would do best in a home with an existing dog who will want to play with her, can teach her the routine, and help her to learn that she doesn’t have to be afraid. If you are interested in meeting and possibly adopting Gretta, the first step is to submit an adoption application. Please go to our website www.k9bestfriendsforever.com and click on "Adopt" which will take you to our online application form.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Gretta, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
