My story

Mochi is a 4–5-year-old purebred Akita looking for her forever home in Vancouver. She originally came from a family who got her for her "designer breed" status but could no longer care for her. Now in foster care, we're discovering just how special she truly is. Mochi is fully house-trained, enjoys car rides, and even knows a few tricks like “sit” and “shake paw.” She grew up in a condo and is perfectly content with apartment living—especially since she's relatively low-energy for her size. While she does enjoy bursts of play (chasing a ball is her favorite!), she’s happiest lounging at home, soaking up belly rubs, and just hanging out with her person. At only 22 kg, she's quite petite for an Akita—truly a little bean! Despite the Akita reputation for independence, Mochi is incredibly affectionate and genuinely enjoys human companionship. That said, she still has that classic Akita stubborn streak and likes to make her own decisions. She’s a quiet dog who rarely barks, and she's curious about the world around her. Because her previous family didn’t take her out much, she’s now relishing the joys of long walks, new adventures, and simply being a dog. Important things to know about Mochi: She prefers to be the only dog in the household. Due to limited socialization as a puppy, she can be reactive when meeting some other dogs. However, on group hikes, she’s learned how to coexist and do her own thing. Mochi thrives with someone who understands the Akita personality—independent but deeply loyal once a bond is formed. She has mild separation anxiety and food allergies, but we've found two food brands that work well for her. She’s a survivor—having been through three surgeries (Pyometra and Patella Luxation on her right knee), Mochi is now healthy, happy, and ready for her next chapter. Mochi is looking for a home where she can be someone’s one and only, where she’ll be loved for the smart, quirky, and affectionate dog she is. If you’re looking for a medium-large dog who’s low-maintenance, quiet, and fiercely loyal, Mochi might just be your perfect match. Think Mochi could be the one for you? Send us an application and tell us a bit about yourself—we’d love to hear from you!

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Meimei (aka Mochi), please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
