My story

My name is Groot and I came to the shelter as a stray so not much is known about me. I am a younger dog that would thrive in an active home where I can go on long walks and get lots of attention. I am still working on learning manners and being alone, but I am a smart guy and love to learn! Of course, we always recommend slow and monitored introductions with new people or pets in the house. If you have any questions please ask to speak to shelter staff. Thank you for stopping by, and I hope we can be friends!INSIGHTS FROM MY ADVENTURE BUDDIES:`Groot was a lovely companion on our Dog Day Out. He learned quickly that I would not walk when there was tension (pulling) on the leash and would either stay still, or return to my side before I walked further. He loved getting treats and praise - he got lots of both!We went to Blackwood Farm Park and he did amazingly well walking on the trail. Even more than being motivated by treats he seemed motivated by how many great smells there were. He walked so well on the leash and listed when I asked him to stop or to sit. Adorably, he was tentative about getting his paws wet in the small stream that we crossed. While I walked through it, he opted to do a beautiful leap right over it and keep his paws dry and clean. He rode so well in the car! He was eager to hop up in the truck and let me put an extra harness on him to get him buckled in and secure. He happily sat and then laid down on the drive over to the park.I think Groot is a gem of a dog. He seems to be very smart and would likely respond well to some training and structure. He was lively but did a great job of checking in with me and listening throughout our outing. By the time we got back he was loose-leashing walking like a pro and rolled over so I could pat his belly.``Groot was super friendly and attentive. He was very happy to hop in the car and drive to the woods for a walk, and he was very well behaved in the car. He pulled on the leash, but eventually we tried a “hup!” with a sharp tug when he started pulling and praised him when he walked without pulling and he seemed to catch on quick! Groot was excellent with our two kids— 7 and 11– very loving but not overbearing. For a young dog, Groot was pretty mellow. He came over for pets and belly rubs, but didn’t lick any faces or knock anybody over with exuberance. Overall, a very sweet tempered, happy pup. Groot was very sweet and loving.`

If you have any questions or would like to adopt GROOT, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
