My story

Meet Scar ACCT-A-177624! Scar is a 1-year-old male who was brought in by animal protection officers as a stray on 7/30. Scar is unfortunately no stranger to the shelter as he was here back in November of 2024 as an owner surrender due to the owner not having enough time. Despite having a new dent in his head from something striking him, Scar is as handsome as ever. He leashed easily and came out. Once in the yard, Scar wanted cuddles which I provided. He did not act as if the dent on his head was painful with petting or kisses. After cuddling, we played fetch. Scar gets excited and jumpy with treats but we worked on putting all four paws on the ground before being rewarded. He seemed friendly and curious with dogs through the fence and nonreactive when another dog snapped at him through the fence. Scar frequently took breaks from playing to get cuddles, he would hop into my lap and snuggle in to be hugged. We spent some time in the volunteer office to see if he would settle and he didn’t. A very active but sweet dog who needs a lot of exercise, treats, play, and cuddles on his daily schedule!” On 7/31 Staff noted: “Scar was positioned at the front of his kennel with a neutral demeanor, exhibiting a low tail and exhibiting signs of nervousness and avoidance. He repeatedly moved his head away as the leash was approached. Upon opening the kennel door, I extended my hand for him to sniff, and he approached with a lowered body posture. When attempting to leash him, he exhibited lip-raising and started bucking. I lasso'd to secure him; once secured, he exited the kennel without any issue. In the evaluation room, Scar displayed high levels of arousal on the leash, darting around and refusing to remain still. He intermittently wrapped his arms around my body and then moved away. I offered him a treat from my hand, which he accepted gently; however, when prompted to sit, he became mouthy, rowdy, and aroused, frequently jumping on my legs and nipping at my hands and near my face. This pattern persisted despite multiple attempts by myself and another staff member to instruct him to sit. To assess his behavior further, I retrieved a treat from the bag after observing evident mouthing marks on my arms. Scar immediately jumped at my hands with an open mouth, snapping upwards. I had to repeatedly pull him away as he continued. Recognizing his heightened arousal and mouthing, I decided it was safest to return him to his kennel.” Behavior Notes From Previous Stay: Per staff 11/10/24: Scar had continued to mouth at my hands and was aroused when I returned him to kennel. His pressure was a little bit more than before each time.” Per staff 11/10/24: “BEHAVIOR EVALUATION: Scar KNOWN HISTORY: Owner surrender KENNEL PRESENTATION: Scar was at the front of his kennel when I approached. I looked over and called him up and he was very still with neutraleyes. I reached in slowly with the leash and he backed up to sniff it. I slowly looped it over his head and once secured he came right out. LEASH SKILLS: Pulls minimally - very nervous on leash HANDLING: In the room, Scar ran over to the corner of the room and stayed there with scared wide eyes and stared at me and another staff member that had come in. I got some treats and slowly approached him, making myself a little smaller as he tried to back into the corner further and did a slight lip raise at me. I tossed the treat and came up to him with some more in my hand. He avoided me at first and ate the treat and then came up with a tucked wagging tail and tense body. He allowed me to pet his head but froze and began lip licking so I gave him space and walked away. I would continue this process of slowly approaching, offering treats, attempting handling and walking away as he continued to lip lick, side eye and become very tense and still when i tried handling him. I moved onto play which made him warm up tons as he ran after a ball for a couple of minutes and then called him over for some handling. He allowed the majority of the handling without reaction but whipped around and mouthed at my hand when I touched his butt and tail. He then jumped up on me and tried to solicit for head pets. I got him down and tried to handle him some more which he allowed more freely. PLAY: Interest and would jump up and get mouthy - with more time, there was more pressure TOYS: Interest” Per staff 11/10/24: “Saw him out with a volunteer during the photoshoot and he seemed fine behaviorally” Per staff 11/10/24: “Seems like a sweetie baby. Gave me such gentle licks through the kennel bars” Per owner: “He loves attention, Dont like being alone, Like's playing with the cat. Lived with children and a cat, high energy. Very cautious around people he don’t know. Cautions with strangers, wants to play with children, friendly with cats, not to friendly with dogs. He loves attention, loves walks, knows how to fetch. Don't like being alone.” Medical Notes: Per an exam on 7/31: “Lost 11lbs since he was here last, sunken muscles over eyes. Objective: -Mild dental calculus -Thin body condition with mild muscle wasting over temporalis muscles (R>L). -Allowed all handling Assessment: -temporalis muscle atrophy - r/o MMM vs neurological vs endocrine disease vs idiopathic vs other Per an intake exam on 7/30: -significant muscle wasting over OD -Coat is very clean and shiny, no fleas or hair loss -BAR, very friendly, food motivated Per an exam on 11/9/24: Scar was found to be in good general health and was noted to be “Nervous but is a sweet boy, food motivated. Tail remained tuck, lip licking and panting during check in. Able to give vaccines while dog was distracted with cheese.” ACCT Philly is located at 111 West Hunting Park Ave in Philadelphia.
